Graeme Swann is having a great time of things at the moment and has the wood over a number of West Indies batsmen. When his first ball at Bristol was planted over long-on by Gayle, Swann didn't panic and removed the West Indies captain next ball. Gayle is unlikely to hold back if faced with Swann again, so this duel could have a second chapter in the final game. Strauss certainly won't be afraid of throwing Swann the ball.

The one West Indies player who can hold their head high is Dwayne Bravo after he made an attractive half century and bowled with heart. But as hard as he tried he couldn't rouse his team-mates out of their slumber. Without a doubt, his return strengthens the team, but he needs much more support than was shown on Sunday.

Team news

Unless the England management want to have a look at Ryan Sidebottom and Ian Bell there seems little reason to change a winning side. This will be Strauss's last match as captain before the Ashes - he hands over the captaincy to Paul Collingwood for the World Twenty20.

England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Ravi Bopara, 3 Matt Prior (wk), 4 Owais Shah, 5 Paul Collingwood 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Dimitri Mascarenhas, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Tim Bresnan, 11 James Anderson

West Indies surely must look to make some changes. Lendl Simmons is struggling with his technique against the moving ball and they really need the strike power of Fidel Edwards. The sensible swap would be to open with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, but he appears reluctant for the role.

West Indies (probable) 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Lendl Simmons, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Darren Sammy, 9 Jerome Taylor, 10 Sulieman Benn, 10 Fidel Edwards

England v West Indies, 2nd ODI win by 1 runs

England made easy work of a shambolic West Indies side as they coasted to a six-wicket victory at Bristol. A change of format and having the sun on their backs did nothing to improve the visitors' performance as they were shot out for 160. Stuart Broad did the damage at either end of the innings, but Paul Collingwood was the middle-order destroyer with 3 for 16 and Collingwood completed the victory with a sprightly, unbeaten 47.

The only stages that West Indies threatened to make a match where as Chris Gayle briefly flourished before being outdone by a smart piece of captaincy from Andrew Strauss, then when Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Dwayne Bravo added 63 for the fourth wicket. However, when Tim Bresnan removed Chanderpaul the order unravelled rapidly against tight bowling and a sharp fielding. England were impressive, but some of the shot selection and general thinking from West Indies left plenty to be desired as the last seven wickets tumbled for a paltry 53.

Broad was on target straight away after Andrew Strauss won a useful toss and trapped Lendl Simmons - who has suspect technique against the moving ball - leg before as the batsman played across a straight ball. In Broad's next over, as he pushed 90mph, he found the perfect length to bring Ramnaresh Sarwan into a loose push outside off.

Gayle, though, responded to the difficulty of 7 for 2 with typical bravado in his 200th ODI. He began by slashing Broad square then drilled him straight for four having almost picked out mid-off attempting a similar stroke. They were followed by a mighty swing over long-on for six and a slice through backward point and suddenly the momentum was shifting.

Strauss countered with a brave piece of captaincy as he introduced Graeme Swann inside the first Powerplay. The first ball to Gayle disappeared high over long-on for another maximum, but Swann is a confident bowler and didn't panic. He pushed the next delivery through a little quicker, Gayle eyed another boundary but the ball clipped the pad and crashed into the stumps. Strauss had gambled at bowling to Gayle's ego and it paid off.

Chanderpaul is so used to top-order wobbles that fixing them is second nature to him and alongside Bravo he steadied the innings. Bravo, who is coming off a six-week spell at the IPL after being ruled out of the Test series on medical advice, looked in good touch as he profited through his favourite leg-side area and also drove Dimitri Mascarenhas for a sweet straight six.

However, just as the stand with Chanderpaul was building a base for West Indies, Bresnan struck when Chanderpaul top-edged a pull to short third-man and shortly after Bravo reached a 55-ball fifty he missed a slower ball from Collingwood.

campaign that has included matches insipid and inspiring Royal Challengers Bangalore have well and truly come to life. Maintaining the momentum of three consecutive wins, they pulled the rug from under Deccan Chargers' feet and went to No. 3 in the points table, setting up a semi-final clash with the Chennai Super Kings on Saturday. Deccan will play Delhi Daredevils in Friday's semi-final.

At the end of a clinical win, Bangalore can thank Manish Pandey and RP Singh. Promoting Pandey to open in a pressure situation, Bangalore nearly lost him in the third over but RP's gross misjudgment at third man settled the nerves and then some. Either cutting solidly or swatting and slapping with efficiency rather than grace, Pandey grabbed the opportunity and notched up just the second century this season - and the first by an Indian in either season. Few in South Africa would have heard of the Under-19 batsman before today but should remember him after this amazing effort.

Teams have struggled to defend under lights at Centurion, and Bangalore were put on the backfoot as Herschelle Gibbs waded into the attack. But Anil Kumble took pace off the ball and once Gibbs and Andrew Symonds were dismissed in relative succession it all got too tough for Deccan.

RP's drop in the third over came after Jacques Kallis pulled his seventh ball to short square leg. It proved a costly error. Pandey began his innings looking out of sorts, twice inside-edging Ryan Harris on the bounce to Adam Gilchrist and top-edging safely to third man. Batting as though Bangalore needed to chase 250, Pandey clouted the ball through the leg side with abandon.

Bangalore to keep Chennai super kings

Parthiv Patel stunned Royal Challengers Bangalore at the top, but smart bowling changes and smart bowling thereafter kept pulling Chennai Super Kings back whenever they threatened to move too far out of reach. The result? A late assault never came, and Bangalore were left to chase a below-par total on a flat Wanderers track.

It started a bit differently, though, for Bangalore. The whole talk before the semi-final centered around the orange cap holder Mathew Hayden and whether he would be back for the big match. But Bangalore were hit from an unexpected quarter. It's not often you go outscoring Hayden in good form, and if you do you better be playing exceptionally. That's precisely what Parthiv did today.

After playing out one quiet over, Parthiv targeted Jaques Kallis, who tried attacking Parthiv with the short delivery but was in turn taken for three boundaries, all off short bowling - a pull, a rapacious cut and one subtle upper-cut.

In the next over Parthiv attacked Praveen Kumar too, pulling and then square-driving him. Two overs and two more boundaries off R Vinay Kumar later Parthiv had reached 32 off 20 deliveries, while Hayden was still 13. What odds would punters get for that?

In the next over, though, Anil Kumble brought back some control, and in Vinay's next Hayden went for one six too many and mis-hit to long-on. Chennai had reached 61 in seven overs. Kumble saw the opportunity and brought back Kallis, whose first two overs had cost 21. With his fourth delivery Kallis removed Parthiv and Bangalore could try and force restrain upon two new batsmen.

The two new batsmen were MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina, in that order. There was a period of quiet around the time-out, and Kallis went for five in his next two overs. Just when Raina looked like opening up, with a four and a six off Vinay, Kumble brought back Praveen in the 15th over. With the first ball, Praveen got Raina to sky a slower ball, and Bangalore had once again prevented Chennai from getting away.

Deccan Chargers Move to final

There's no rust on this baby. Adam Gilchrist didn't just blow the Delhi Daredevils out with a blitzkrieg but also backed up his vow at the end of a disappointing 2008 to give fans in Hyderabad more to cheer for in 2009. Gilchrist played a pivotal role in bringing last season's wooden spoon holders this far and tonight, in the cauldron of a semi-final, he treated Centurion to a stunning display of hitting. His assault on Delhi's bewildered bowlers turned what threatened to be a tricky chase into a no-contest as Deccan chased down 154 with six wickets in hand and 16 balls to spare. Deccan have duly earned the right to be in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Gilchrist had looked like a man with a plan when, at the toss, he said Deccan would field and try and keep the opposition to an achievable target. With teams not always chasing down totals in the vicinity of 160 easily under lights at Centurion, Deccan's chase wasn't expected to be an easy one. It took Gilchrist five deliveries to dismiss such thoughts. Dirk Nannes, one of the success stories of this IPL, was flayed for five consecutive boundaries in the first over, Gilchrist pulling, cutting and driving with power. Nannes was not needed again until the 17th over, when the result was decided.

That assault set a trend that continued though Gilchrist's innings as he made the semi-final his own. Ashish Nehra bowled Herschelle Gibbs for a duck but Gilchrist was in a hurry, clobbering Pradeep Sangwan's first three balls for four, four and six. No frills, just excellent bat speed and powerful wrists. In three overs Deccan were 41 for 1, out of which Nehra's first over cost just three.

Nehra's second was nowhere as controlled. Gilchrist drove a no-ball for four and drilled the free hit for a straight six to raise Deccan's fifty in 23 deliveries - his contribution being 48 from 14 balls. His half-century needed just 17 balls, the fastest of the IPL. Virender Sehwag came on for the first and last time in the tournament, with Gilchrist plundering three successive sixes in a 25-run over. It was the Gilchrist of old, the man who put the fear of God in bowlers the world over.

Why Sehwag brought himself on before Amit Mishra and the crafty Rajat Bhatia on a sluggish track will go down as one of the IPL's blunders, because the legspinner struck almost immediately. Gilchrist fell for a superb 85 from 35 balls one delivery before the strategic break, but the damage had been done. Mishra then cut Andrew Symonds off before he could finish the job. Rohit Sharma walked out with 17 required from 38 balls and closed the deal in T Suman's company.

One of the biggest let-downs of the current IPL had been Virender Sehwag's silence with the bat. Today's dead game was the opportunity to get back into some form before the knock-out stage. Would he be slightly restrained? Or would he be the Sehwag we know? In the end, it was a mixture of the two. It was not a matter of settling down before he got going; that's not in his character. So, while he never tried to go after Harbhajan Singh, he let loose against the likes of Dhawal Kulkarni. It wasn't a free-flowing knock but, by the end, there were signs of his old touch.

His loss of form was belied by the first five balls he faced, which fetched him three boundaries - the highlight being a punchy cover drive. It wasn't a surprise, it was in character. Harbhajan came on immediately after that and another question arose: Would Sehwag go after him? Harbhajan flighted them up and kept them full, inviting the big slog-sweep or the inside-out drive Sehwag is famous for against spinners. Sehwag didn't take the bait; he chose to defend. Only once did he try to back away to cut but inside-edged it away. This was surprising but showcased his desire to hit form before the big games.

There was a moment against Abhishek Nayar that hinted at his problem. In the Sehwag world, problems doesn't translate to being scoreless; he never allows himself to be strangled. Rather it was in the intent to break free with big hits that one spotted the problem. He tried to cart Nayar over cow corner but ended up with a heave, a drag, towards deep midwicket for a single. He was going too hard in his shots and clearly hadn't shaken off the effects of the injury he picked up earlier in the tournament. He stood at the non-striker's end and repeatedly practised his bat swing.

Sehwag carries a perception that he doesn't think too much about his batting. His batting style and, importantly, his aggressive mindset regardless of the situation give off that impression. But the perception couldn't be more wrong. He works hard and long in the nets, though he makes it look like a lark. Sometimes he hums a song while playing the spinners. Almost throughout the session, though, he will ask the bowlers to tell him the simulated field-settings and the match situation and will play according to it. While batting, he says, his mind remains blank. That's not the state of mind of an unthinking cricketer but that of a man extremely keen to stay in the ideal state of mind while preparing to face the ball.

Watch out for

Ramesh Powar v Matthew Hayden: Adam Gilchrist, for long Hayden's opening partner, learnt in the last match not to fall for Powar's flight. Because the ball dips, drifts, and breaks. Hayden, though, is fresh off countering Shane Warne in what has been Chennai's most crucial win so far.

Team news

The time for experiments is over. Expect Hayden to be back. Jacob Oram should face competition from George Bailey. One out of M Vijay and Parthiv Patel should make the XI.

Chennai: (probable) 1 M Vijay/Parthiv Patel, 2 Matthew Hayden, 3 MS Dhoni (capt./wk), 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Albie Morkel, 6 Jacob Oram/George Bailey, 7 S Badrinath, 8 Sudeep Tyagi, 9 Shadab Jakati, 10 L Balaji, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan.

How Punjab will be hoping Mahela Jayawardene regains his fitness, because Luke Pomersbach has not been able to reprise any of his form from the previous year. They have to make the call between Karan and Sohal too. If only they could find a local batsman to replace Pomersbach, they could play both Brett Lee and Yusuf Abdulla.

Punjab: (probable) 1 Sunny Sohal/Karan Goel, 2 Simon Katich, 3 Yuvraj Singh (capt.), 4 Luke Pomersbach/Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 6 Irfan Pathan, 7 Wilkin Mota, 8 Piyush Chawla, 9 Sreesanth, 10 Ramesh Powar, 11 Brett Lee/Yusuf Abdulla.

ere's a sneak preview to the clash between a team that found a win after a string of losses with the defending champion that is fighting hard to seize a semifinal berth.
Lots really because Rajasthan Royals need a win to boost their confidence further – but will have to depend on the other team’s performances as well -- while for Kolkata Knight Riders, there is not much left in this tournament.

Shane Warne must be applauded for having lead his team well till now. He has been successful in inspiring a team which has been plagued by poor form, injuries and inconsistencies. Knight Riders captain Brendon McCullum's own form until the last match says the true story of the team.

Again it will be a battle between Graeme Smith and Ishant Sharma, but it could be an interesting to watch Warne tempt Sourav Ganguly again.

Kolkata Knight Riders are still nursing bruised hearts whereas Rajasthan Royals will be leaving no stone unturned to get full points from the match.

Rajasthan Royals have been inconsistent but have managed to win matches from crunch situations while Knight Riders have been unable to translate form into victories right through this tournament until that last game.

was intense drama at Newlands and the match went down to Super Over. Rajasthan Royals then did everything right by sending in their ‘Lethal weapon’ who whacked his way to victory.

Yusuf Pathan broke the hearts of Kolkata Knight Riders' fans by his clean hitting in the Super Over as he chased down 16 runs in four deliveries. He had earlier smashed 42 off just 21 balls to help Royals post a decent total.
Warne knows how to seize key moments of a match. His choice of batsman (Yusuf Pathan) and bowler (Kamran Khan) did the trick while McCullum’s decision to bowl Ajantha Mendis proved to be fatal.

Brett Lee and Ashish Nehra, two of the finest exponents of the art of pace and swing bowling, were on top of their game and sought their best to reduce all else to being mere members of support cast as Kings XI Punjab shocked table toppers Delhi Daredevils by six wickets in the DLF Indian Premier League here on Friday and gave themselves the chance to making the semifinals.

Both men were hostile, bowling with the palpable intent of hassling and hustling the opposition batsmen. On a track that was not exactly conducive to their ilk, Lee and Nehra found the motivation to showcase the best of their skills but though Nehra bowled as many as 18 dot balls in a dream spell, it was Lee who caused more damage.

Lee got the dangerous Virender Sehwag nibbling a catch down the leg side in the third over of the evening. Gautam Gambhir’s run out dismissal in the next over meant that Kings XI Punjab could hold Lee back just in case Delhi Daredevils launched a fightback. In the event, Lee came back to harass Farvez Mahroof into submission in the 17th over and Rajat Bhatia with the first ball of his next over

With AB de Villiers and Tillekeratne Dilshan also falling cheaply – a rare event in IPL 2009 – Delhi Daredevils were unable to make more than 120 for nine in 20 overs. S Sreesanth and Irfan Pathan picked up two wickets each as well with some tight bowling.

The stage was set for Nehra and Sangwan to hit back but while Nehra was stupendous, Sangwan – bowling with the new ball and not first change – was expensive as Simon Katich waded into him in his first over and Irfan Pathan did likewise in the left-arm seamer’s final over to release some of the pressure that was building on Kings XI Punjab.

Kumar Sangakkara top-scored, using all his technical acumen to ensure that Kings XI Punjab would not collapse as dramatically as Delhi Daredevils. He controlled the rudder as his team crossed the line. Of course, he was helped by Yuvraj Singh and Irfan Pathan in directing the chase from 35 for three.

Delhi Daredevils opted to make three changes to the squad that squeezed a dramatic win over Deccan Chargers in the last game. Opener David Warner, fast bowler Dirk Nannes and leg-spinner Amit Mishra were all rested. In their place, Farvez Mahroof, Mithun Manhas and Daniel Vettori were roped in. Those who came in performed creditably.

Yusuf Pathan isn't a man who looks too far ahead – probably the distance to the boundary ropes is the farthest he goes. Shane Warne thinks he is the team's lethal weapon, coaches Darren Berry and Jeremy Snape cannot stop smiling whenever he pulls a win out of nowhere in the DLF Indian Premier League.

In an exclusive interview with iplt20.com, the utility cricketer whose hard-hitting ability has been compared with Andrew Symonds, Yusuf Pathan speaks about playing alongside Shane Warne and Graeme Smith and about his natural game.

He is one of the all-time greats. He has played a lot of cricket for Australia. I think my total match appearance even in domestic cricket is less than his wickets tally. Warne has been a great help. He has taught me how to judge the pitch and the technique of batsmen. I get the same feeling for Sachin-paaji (Tendulkar). It feels great when they speak about me. To get a mention in their interviews is a great achievement for me.

He is a great team man. He captains his national side and brings that experience to our team. He has been very helpful especially for the youngsters to adapt to the conditions here. He is very easy going and always generates positive vibes. Playing with him has been a great experience. One can learn a lot while watching him prepare for a match. He takes his cricket seriously and is hard working.

I don't want to change anything with my batting. I will continue to play my natural game. For me, it's important to remain confident and my body language should be positive even under pressure. We all know it just takes few good overs or a few good minutes on the field to win a game. It is important to take some risks; stay mentally strong and believe I can do it.

At the moment, all that I am focusing on is the next few games. Trying to do whatever I can, try as hard as I well possibly can to get something going," McCullum said after the team slumped to a seven-wicket defeat against the Delhi Daredevils here last night.

McCullum had earlier decided to step down from the captain's job if the team missed the semifinal berth but the Kiwi didn't give a straight answer when asked if he was going to quit any time soon.

"I know I mentioned that a couple of games ago and that is something that I have got to look at. I'll work out with the coaching staff next year, what the goal is.

"But whatever happens I will be totally committed to Kolkata Knight Riders and helping to get us get some results in the future that we all are immensely proud of," he said.

Looking back at the team's wretched run in the tournament, McCullum felt it was a combination of bad luck and poor execution that did the side in.

"A bit of both. When things are going for you, you get the luck. Things obviously aren't going for us at the moment. And we are not getting the luck go our way," McCullum said. Asked to pinpoint reasons behind the team's spectacular slide, McCullum said, "It's hard to put your finger (on any one thing). We haven't played consistently well across the board during each game.

"We get our batting going well and our bowling and fielding let us down. We get our bowling going well and our batting lets us down. We are not consistent across all the areas of the game," he said.

"No one in particular to blame"

McCullum, however, had no complain against any individuals.

"This is certainly not because of lack of trying, guys out there are trying as hard as we possibly can. Unfortunately things aren't going our way," he said.

"The way we played tonight, that makes me very proud to be a captain. You walk off with smile on your face and positive body language because you know that you have had a team that had given everything that they possibly had," he added.

Jesse Ryder's manager has termed as "grossly exaggerated and inaccurate" reports of the New Zealand batsman being restrained by security guards in South Africa. Aaron Klee admitted that Ryder had broken his vow not to touch alcohol, but said there was no altercation with security guards.

Radio Sport and Newstalk ZB reported earlier today that Ryder, who plays for IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, had to be controlled during an off-field incident. "It's disappointing that these false and unverified rumours are being reported as fact by the media," Klee said in a statement. "Let's be fair to Jesse - this is not a big issue. Jesse rang me and explained what happened several nights ago. He is disappointed that he drank after being off all alcohol for over 100 days.

"But there was no security incident. We have already taken steps to make sure he has additional support during his time in the IPL."

Ryder's Bangalore coach Ray Jennings also concurred. "It is over exaggerated," Jennings told Cricinfo. "There is no issue."

Ryder had sworn off alcohol after an incident resulted in him missing a match for his country. His mentor Murray Deaker released a statement reinforcing the need for the batsman to stay sober. "Jesse's had over a hundred days of sobriety and has made enormous progress during that time, on and off the field," he said. "Now for that to continue he needs support and moves have already been made to assist him to get back on top."

A New Zealand Cricket spokesman said the board would not comment until full details of the supposed incident were available.

In February 2008 Ryder had put his hand through a window while trying to gain access to a toilet area that had been accidentally locked. Ryder was then fined for missing a team meeting and a training session after a late night of drinking and was left out of the XI for an ODI against West Indies in early 2009. He was subsequently reported to have given up alcohol.

Chennai Super Kings rise to semi final

Chennai Super Kings turned in a professional display as they beat defending champions Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets, becoming the second side after Kings XI Punjab to chase a target successfully in the DLF Indian Premier League at the De Beers Diamond Oval here on Saturday.

After Rajasthan Royals captain Shane Warne won the toss and opted to bat, the Chennai Super Kings bowlers did very well to restrict them to 140 for seven in their 20 overs. As many as three top order batsmen – Graeme Smith, Swapnil Asnodkar and Ravindra Jadeja – got off to starts but none was able to play an impact innings.

It was only a swashbuckling effort by Warne in the end that took Rajasthan Royals to 140, leaving his counterpart Mahendra Singh Dhoni wondering if Chennai Super Kings had conceded a few runs more than expected. He knew his spinners had bowled 11 overs and that Rajasthan Royals could try something similar.

Indeed, Warne tried that, bowling Yusuf Pathan's four overs before the Strategic Break and bowling four himself and using Jadeja's left-arm spin. But there was a key difference. The Chennai Super Kings spinners claimed four wickets and the Rajasthan Royals tweakers manager only one among them. And Warne's pace bowlers were more expensive too.

Kings XI Punjab Taken Two points

Kings XI Punjab snapped out of a disappointing streak with a three-wicket victory off the penultimate delivery against Deccan Chargers at the De Beers Diamond Oval here on Saturday. Mahela Jayawardene directed the chase with a knock of 43 that included three sixes and scoring the bulk of the runs after walking in at 85 for three as KXIP chased 169 to win.

In a game in which fortunes swung wildly, Jaywardene played the steadying hand and the aggressor too as KXIP got home and picked up two points that will keep them in the race for a semifinal place. With 10 points, they are now fifth behind Delhi Daredevils (12), Chennai Super Kings (11), Rajasthan Royals (11) and Deccan Chargers (10).

It was a great opening game at this ground in a city that was founded when prospectors discovered diamond mines here. The number of times the scales swung from one side to the other in the span of a few minutes ensured that the fans who turned up here were treated to a delightful contest that went down to the wire.

Kings XI were also indebted to tail-enders Brett Lee and Piyush Chawla for staying calm after Jaywaderdene and Wilkinson Mota were run out in a frenetic chase. Deccan Chargers were left ruing the fact that Andrew Symonds was unable to back his explosive batting with restrictive bowling and went for 20 runs in his only over.

Gilchrist may have lost the plot a bit in picking pacemen to bowl the final two overs ahead of men who had made an impact. Rohit Sharma picked up two wickets but bowled just two overs. Venugopal Rao gave away three runs in his only over and yet Gilchrist preferred Ryan Harris and RP Singh, allowing Lee and Chawla to use their pace to land one big blow each.

Earlier, Deccan Chargers were able to post a competitive total riding on the back of an explosive unbeaten 60 by Symonds, a32 by Venugopal Rao and their 95 run stand off 9.2 overs. It looked as if KXIP would regret the inability of their bowlers to handle the pressure of the death overs but opener Sunny Sohal (30), Jayawardene and the tail-enders had different ideas.

The Australian legend was the only wicket-keeper-batsman to make a century in the inaugural DLF-IPL edition. The superstar led Deccan Chargers in some games in the 2008 season when VVS Laxman was injured and has been assigned the full responsibility this season. Ruthless with the bat, he hammers the opposition bowlers and is a crowd-puller in his own right.

He was at his destructive best last season, leading the scoring charts for the team. He faces the challenge of lifting Deccan Chargers from the bottom of the pile that it found itself in despite possessing an amazing batting line-up.

Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Anil Kumble is not one to throw in the towel. He was pretty much the same strong character as he met the media at the end of a thrashing at the hands of Rajasthan Royals in the DLF Indian Premier League game here on Thursday.

On what went wrong: The pitch was a bit tough early on. Maybe it was a good toss to win. And early up the ball was not coming onto the bat, there was bit of a bounce... obviously we lost too many wickets and we lost momentum. Basically we didn't get any partnerships. Even in shorter versions you need partnerships and that didn't happen today.

On the conditions playing a part: I mean, today maybe first six or seven overs, possibly was with the bowlers. If we had got through it we would have maybe scored about 140-150. On that wicket it was a pretty decent par score. We could have defended that if he had got early wickets. Possibly we lost too many wickets, Rahul Dravid got out to a ball that you don't generally nick it. But it is one of those days. Jacques Kallis was almost dropped, picked up right at the end. It is one of those things which didn't go our way.

On Robin Uthappa's failure: That's cricket... you can't.... if everybody.... if things went to script, then every game you would win. So that's the beauty of cricket and that's the way it is.

On whether this loss is a setback: We have won three out of the last four games we have played. We still have five. So the next game is against Mumbai Indians and obviously we have done well against them. We would like take that kind of confidence. You can't think that we have lost this game and we have lost momentum. I don't think so. I think every game is a different game, new game. We will have to adapt to the conditions and try and force a win. Again if we win that, we will be again part of the top five. I think, till the last few games we are still in the race. So we would like to look at it in that sense and approach every game as a final.

ICC for World Cup exclusion Pakistan Changed

In the first official response to the ICC's decision to exclude Pakistan from hosting the 2011 World Cup, the Pakistan board has issued a legal notice to cricket's governing body, calling the decision to do so discriminatory and "legally flawed."

The ICC decided at a recent board meeting in Dubai to take away Pakistan's share, as one of four co-hosts, of the World Cup matches. The move came after terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan team during their February-March tour, which was itself the first major bilateral contest in Pakistan since October 2007. A number of teams since then had refused to visit in the wake of an unsettled and increasingly violent domestic backdrop. The meeting also said that international cricket was unlikely to return to Pakistan till 2011.

Ijaz Butt, chairman of PCB, had hitherto maintained a stony silence on the decision, to the ire of much of the population here. But at a press conference at the board's HQ in Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium, flanked by senior officials and legal advisors, he said that the manner in which the ICC decision was taken was "legally flawed...unfair and discriminatory." Pakistan's gripe, Butt clarified, was that the status of the 2011 World Cup was not on the original agenda of the ICC Board meeting on April 17 and 18 (when the decision was made), the implication being that Pakistan wasn't given a fair opportunity to defend its case as a co-host.

"This issue was not on the agenda," Butt said. "There was a discussion of the Sri Lankan attacks on the agenda and this topic came up. They never gave us notice and it was not on the agenda. We want to revoke the decision full stop."

The legal notice has been sent to the ICC president David Morgan and under the ICC's constitution, the PCB is asking for the matter to be referred to the disputes resolution committee. "We are most concerned about the way the decision was taken. We believe more should and could have been done before the decision was taken and we will push for the matter to be expedited," Butt said.

Chennai, despite their winning streak, have two missing links in their piece: the opening pace bowler (Manpreet Gony is not fitting that role) and the opener along with Hayden (S Badrinath was tried last game, and scored a golden duck). But the bright side is that ever since Badrinath has moved up the order - and has thus got a few balls to play himself in - he has played an important anchor role in the middle order.

Chennai: 1 S Badrinath/M Vijay/Parthiv Patel, 2 Matthew Hayden, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 5 Albie Morkel, 6 Jacob Oram/George Bailey, 7 Shadab Jakati, 8 Sudeep Tyagi, 9 L Balaji, 10 Manpreet Gony/Joginder Sharma/extra batsman, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan.

It's unlikely Rajasthan will drop Amit. Lee Carseldine, Naman Ojha and Abhishek Raut have been good additions late in the season. It should be touch and go between Morne Morkel, who got his first game when he played against Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Dimitri Mascarenhas.

Rajasthan: 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Naman Ojha (wk), 3 Lee Carseldine, 4 Yusuf Pathan, 5 Ravindra Jadeja, 6 Niraj Patel, 7 Abhishek Raut, 8 Shane Warne (capt.), 9 Dimitri Mascarenhas/Morne Morkel, 10 Amit Singh, 11 Munaf Patel.

Australia were due to tour Pakistan for a full series in March 2008 but pulled out because of security concerns. The tour was postponed, but after the terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan team in March this year and the subsequent ICC move to take the 2011 World Cup away from Pakistan, international cricket within Pakistan is all but ruled out for the next few years. The PCB, therefore, is looking for ways to minimize the impact on its FTP and is actively looking at neutral venues where it can stage future home commitments.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai, where Pakistan just played an ODI series against Australia, is one option but England has always been another, ever since Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, floated the idea last year.

"There is a lot of discussion going on between the three parties," an official involved in the negotiations told Cricinfo. "Nothing has been finalised just yet but we are getting closer to the possibility that Pakistan plays its Tests against Australia in England next year."

There are obstacles still in the way before any agreement is reached. The first is the itinerary: CA wants to play two Tests and two Twenty20 internationals, while the Pakistan board is keener on a three-Test and three-ODI series. Whichever schedule is settled upon, it will have to be worked in between three international series in the English summer: Bangladesh are touring in May-June for a Test and ODI series and West Indies in July and August. Additionally, in June, Australia are due to play a five-match ODI series with England. Further complication may come in the form of the P20, the ECB's answer to the IPL, which begins from next summer and may involve international players.

Chennai Super Kings outclassed Deccan Chargers in all departments to win the DLF Indian Premier tie by 78 runs at Buffalo Park, East London on Monday. The win, third on the trot for the men in yellow, has put Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his brigade on the top of the table and the skipper is not only happy about the victory but also about regaining his touch with the bat that fetched him the man-of-the-match award today.

"Yes winning three matches on trot is a good sign in this format of the game. I am happy about my batting as I hadn't been able to do much with the bat till now," he said. "Today I promoted myself up the order as I am not the kind of batsman who loves to hit from the first ball. I like to take my time in the middle and then set my innings slowly and steadily. I did exactly that today and I did well."

Dhoni said that three early wickets played a key role in their victory. "Deccan Chargers rely a lot on the explosive batting of Gilchrist and Gibbs. So taking their wickets was the key and our pacers did their job well in the beginning. With 178 on board, it was always going to be difficult for them after that.

Strauss himself will on Wednesday be leading Indian Premier League players who arrived back from the Twenty20 tournament in South Africa only late last week, not that far ahead of the West Indies captain.

But Strauss makes a distinction between those circumstances - surrounding his three key middle-order batsmen Kevin Pietersen, Ravi Bopara and Paul Collingwood - and Gayle's appearance barely 48 hours before the first ball of a two-match series is due to be bowled.

"Certainly, we wouldn't want our players to arrive two days before," he spelled out.

"We are trying to avoid going too far over that line. That is an important thing."

At stake according to Strauss is not just the one-off ability of an individual to prepare in time to play at the highest level but the bigger picture of the sacred primacy of Test cricket over the hugely-lucrative Twenty20 format.

"You don't want Test cricket to be devalued in any way, shape or form," he believes.

"The important thing is that Test cricket gets the attention it deserves, and that means people prepare themselves properly for any Test match they play.

"None of us wants a situation where international cricket is competing against IPL cricket. I think that is unhealthy for the game and unhealthy for the IPL - and most importantly, unhealthy for the future of Test cricket."

As for his own IPL contingent, Strauss appears entirely satisfied with the arrangements they have abided by and their preparation to try to wrest back the Wisden Trophy lost against these opponents in the Caribbean this past winter

the guys who have come back from the IPL, their enthusiasm in meetings and practice has been huge," the captain reports.

"I know they all thoroughly enjoyed their experience, because it was so different. That is a symptom of a good mindset. That is the key. If they get that right, they will go out and perform."

Asked bluntly whether it was a mistake for England's players to take part in the IPL with so little time available - especially bearing in mind the injury suffered there by pivotal all-rounder Andrew Flintoff - Strauss replied: "I don't think so.

"We've got a Twenty20 World Cup just around the corner. If those guys haven't learned anything from those four weeks then they're never going to learn anything."

Zaheer Khan will miss Mumbai Indians' next match against Deccan Chargers at Centurion on Wednesday, as he is nursing a shoulder injury which he picked up in the previous game against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Zaheer, while attempting to stop a drive from Robin Uthappa, fell on his bowling shoulder and left the field wincing in pain.

Luckily, both for Mumbai and India, subsequent scans have revealed nothing serious and the left-arm fast bowler is expected to be back in action pretty soon. "He [Zaheer] had a scan on his injured shoulder today. We had feared the worst but it's not as bad as we thought it could be originally. There is a little bit of inflammation. We will be taking it day by day. But he will not be playing against Hyderabad (Deccan) and that's for sure," Shaun Pollock, Mumbai's mentor-cum-coach, told the media after the team practice session, which Zaheer did not attend.

At the halfway stage, Mumbai are languishing at second place from bottom after registering three wins in their seven games. Pollock agreed Zaheer's return was imminent and crucial, but he would not like to rush him, keeping in mind that India would like a completely fit Zaheer to defend their crown at the World Twenty20, which begins in England in exactly a month.

"We understand that in the bigger picture there is the World Twenty20. We need to understand that so we don't want him back in action before he is really ready. He has a huge career ahead of him and we don't want to be stupid," Pollock said.

Chargers needs to tell world that their resurgence this season is not a flash in the pan while Chennai Super Kings has to prove that it is the best team in the competition.

Adam Gilchrist has been pretty much the torch-bearer for his sidewhile Mahendra Singh Dhoni is struggling with both form and fitness.

To see Adam Gilchrist and Herschelle Gibbs take on Muttiah Muralitharan would be interesting. If Dhoni decides to open with Murali then the contest would rise several notches. RP Singh will need to strike early or else Matthew Hayden will just take the game away from Deccan Chargers.
Fidel Edwards has left the Deccan Chargers and that will weaken the attack considerably. For Chennai Dhoni's back is a cause for concern.

Deccan Chargers are coming off two successive losses whereas Chennai Super Kings have won their last two games, so it will be a battle of confidence.

In a day game, it looked like Chennai Super Kings had put up a par score but they had not bargained for Herschelle Gibbs' brilliance. Gibbs gave Deccan Chargers a base from which they could easily chase down a decent total. It proved yet again that a sound start was needed for any chase. It proved to be one of the early successful chases of IPL 2.

it was hardly a surprise that Gibbs was voted the Man of the Match because he was the man who held the fort for Deccan Chargers that day.

Ryder's continuing struggle for runs could prompt Bangalore into bringing back Dale Steyn to bolster the pace attack, which had no genuinely quick bowlers in the previous game. With van der Merwe proving competent with the ball, KP Appanna's place could also come under scrutiny if the track isn't spinner-friendly.

Yuvraj took a hat-trick and followed it up with a swashbuckling 50 to earn the man-of-the-match award, but it was not enough to prevent his side slipping to an eight-run win as they could only manage 137 for seven chasing 146.

"We should have won this game," he said in the post-match presentation. "Bangalore bowled really well and we didn't have the chance to hit big sixes and fours. It was good bowling by them.

"We needed a few partnerships. The wickets are getting slower as the tournament goes on, I hope we get a quicker one next time.

"Bangalore played better today, we've got to accept that, but hopefully we'll win next time."

Bangalore skipper Anil Kumble praised Roelof van der Merwe, whose 35 off 19 balls ensured they posted a competitive total.

"It was a great game," he said. "After losing three wicks in three balls I thought Roelof batted fantastically well.

"We certainly backed ourselves and it was a great job by the bowlers.

Kumble, who dismissed Yuvraj, added: "There was certainly something in the wicket. Yuvraj likes pace on the ball and I wanted to take the pace off. It was important to get his wicket and then tighten the strings.

Australia v Pakistan at Abu Dhabi - May 3, 2009
Match scheduled to begin at 15:00 local time (11:00 GMT)

Australia won their first series since beating Bangladesh in September with a strong victory in Abu Dhabi on Friday and the players can relax over the final two games of their United Arab Emirates tour. Sunday's fifth ODI and Thursday's Twenty20 are the last opportunities to tinker ahead of the World Twenty20 and Michael Clarke's men will also be looking forward to a short break before the tournament in England next month.

Clarke was on fire in the heat on Friday, registering 100 off 122 balls in the eight-wicket success, while Shane Watson battled to a timely 85 not out. "It's been a while since we've won a one-day series and to play the type of cricket we have in tough conditions, hot conditions, tough wickets, especially after coming from South Africa, the conditions have been so different," Clarke told AAP. "I'm rapt with the way we've performed."

Doug Bollinger set up the win with the first five wickets of his career as Pakistan reached 197. "A lot of credit has to go to our bowlers, Dougy's come in and he's had to wait a long time for his opportunity," Clarke said. "Not only has he repaid the selectors for showing him faith, but I think he's done a lot to push his name forward for future one-day selection and maybe even the Twenty20 World Cup."

I think Chelsea can beat Barcelona. Even though Barcelona are such a wonderful team I think that defensively Chelsea are as good as they come.

As well as having the best defensive record in the Premiership, Chelsea are excellent at set plays and players such as Frank Lampard and Nicolas Anelka (pictured) are such great goalscorers.

A lot of the Spanish teams are excellent at playing expansive, free-flowing football and so I think it will be a huge clash of styles with Chelsea just coming out on top. Barcelona are not used to coming up against the physically powerful type of team and Chelsea have that quality more than any other.

If there is any left back in the world capable of handling Lionel Messi it is Ashley Cole. But with Ashley suspended it will be interesting to see how Chelsea cope. Messi is obviously one of the best players in the world at the moment but if they can nullify him and come into the second leg either level or even a goal behind I think Chelsea can turn Barcelona over.

The game between Arsenal and Manchester United is going to be really close. Arsenal are playing well and Man United appear to be stuttering a little; they seem to have lost their defensive discipline somewhat, especially after going so long without conceding a goal.

Manchester United descend on relegation-threatened Middlesbrough this weekend knowing another three points will leave them on the brink of a third consecutive Premier League title.

But United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that he cannot afford to unleash all his big guns at the Riverside given that his squad will have only two days to recover before defending a 1-0 advantage in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Arsenal.

With a three-point advantage over Liverpool and a game in hand, United have a significant margin for error in the league.

But with testing fixtures to come - next weekend's Manchester derby and Arsenal's visit to Old Trafford on May 16 - Ferguson will demand that no mercy is shown to Gareth Southgate's strugglers.

Liverpool will be bolstered by the return of captain Steven Gerrard from injury as they seek to exploit any slip-up by United at the expense of relegation-threatened Newcastle, who travel to Anfield on Sunday with goals, points and confidence all in short supply.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has promised United a fight to the finish.

"We have to try and win every game, get three points and see what happens with United," said Benitez.

"They (United) are in a better position than us, but we have to keep going and keep winning matches. They have some tough games and you never know in football, so we have to make sure we do our job.

Saturday May 2, 2009, 15:00, Fratton Par
Rio Ferdinand should be fit for Manchester United?s Champions League semi-final second leg clash with Arsenal next week, Sir Alex Ferguson revealed on Friday.

Ferdinand was substituted in the final minutes of the 1-0 first leg victory at Old Trafford amid fears he had broken a rib. The England defender left the field in visible pain and had to spend a night in hospital.

However, although he will miss United?s Premier League tie with Middlesbrough on Saturday, Ferguson is confident he will be back in United?s starting line-up for the decisive second match at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

Ferguson said: "We have assessed the situation and the good news is that there is nothing cracked or broken which is terrific news.

"There is some bruising which caused a bit of coughing of blood when it happened but nothing has happened since so hopefully we will be able to get him ready for Tuesday.

"When you see someone getting a crack in the rib area you fear the worst with that, particularly when he?s coughing blood, but that has passed over now.

"We just have to try and get him training by Sunday I think and hopefully he will be ready."

If Ferdinand remains unfit, Ferguson is still confident the United squad has enough strength in depth to absorb his loss and still be competitive in both the Premier League and Champions League.

ottenham striker Jermain Defoe has spoken about how his life has been put in perspective following the death of his half-brother Jade.

Jade, who was 26, died in hospital last Friday after suffering serious head injuries in an attack earlier that week.

"My mum turned up at the training ground and because I'm so close to my mum and my family, I knew instantly something was wrong," Defoe said.

"She didn't have to say a word, I knew. I got the news and went straight to the hospital. It wasn't a nice experience but it was one I'll never forget. All my family were at his bedside and it was hard, as you can imagine. It's hard to put into words how I felt but I'm glad I was there.

"When things like that happen it puts everything else into perspective. The things you thought were really important, the most important things in life, you realise they are not.

"My brother will always be in my thoughts and in my heart and I'm sure this will make me stronger and appreciate everything in life.

Wigan striker Mido is recovering well from a shoulder problem and should be fit for Saturday`s visit of Bolton.

The on-loan Middlesbrough forward came off at half-time in last week's defeat to Blackburn but manager Steve Bruce expects the Egypt international to take his place in the starting line-up.

Fellow striker Amr Zaki may be given his first start alongside his compatriot since March 4 as Wigan look to end a three-match losing run.
