Dhoni was named in the squad for the final ODI, which should mean India have no intentions of resting him. His coming back should be the only change in the batting line-up, because India don't have any reserve batsmen. Harbhajan Singh could be rested, though, and this would be the best opportunity to give Sudeep Tyagi a debut.

India: (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Pragyan Ojha, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Sudeep Tyagi, 11 Ashish Nehra.

Their opening problem solved, Sri Lanka are left looking for one more middle-order mainstay to go with Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. Chamara Kapugedera, Thilan Samaraweera and Jayasuriya have all disappointed there, and that will be the only major decision to make. Thissara Perera and Suranga Lakmal should retain their places, while Lasith Malinga will be under pressure to hold his.

Sri Lanka: (probable) 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt/wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 and 6 two out of Sanath Jayasuriya, Chamara Kapugedera and Thilan Samaraweera, 7 Thilina Kandamby, 8 Thissara Perera, 9 Suraj Randiv, 10 Lasith Malinga/Ajantha Mendis, 11 Suranga Lakmal.

Jayasuriya Return to 4th Odi Match

In the absence of in-from all-rounder Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka struggled in Cuttack in the third one-dayer and the visitors might be forced to bring in the once explosive opening batsman at Eden Gardens on Thursday.

India eye series win at Eden Gardens

The team management gave a lot of focus on the 40-year-old left-hander in the practice session on Wednesday and he spent a considerable amount of time batting at the nets.

Team coach Trevor Bayliss was, however, non-committal when asked whether a Sachin (Tendulkar) vs Sanath Jayasuriya battle is on the cards.

"There is always a chance. But, we have not finalised the team yet. In the last two games, we wanted to play with two genuine spinners. Unfortunately, that meant Sanath missing the spot there," he said.

"The pitch seems to be a very good batting wicket, promising plenty of runs," Bayliss said.

Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and in-form Tillakaratne Dilshan did not attend the optional practice on Wednesday.

With Dilshan effectively doing the job Jayasuriya had been doing earlier -- giving Sri Lanka an explosive start, the latter could be used in the middle order once again after the first ODI at Rajkot.

But Jayasuriya, it seemed, is yet to relish the role of a middle-order batsman.

Jayasuriya has some good memories at the Eden with the left-hander scoring a breezy 63 not out before rain washed out the match against India that the stadium hosted last on February 8, 2007.

India: 1 Virender Sehwag (capt), 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Ashish Nehra.

Sri Lanka don't have any new fitness worries but they need to address their middle-order problems. Chamara Kapugedera struggled for fluency in Cuttack before a loose shot sent him back, and Sri Lanka should really reconsider Sanath Jayasuriya over Thilan Samaraweera not least because of the left-arm spinning option he creates.

Sri Lanka: 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt/wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Sanath Jayasuriya/Chamara Kapugedera, 6 Thilina Kandamby, 7 Nuwan Kulasekara, 8 Suraj Randiv, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Chanaka Welegedara.

Dhoni been in great touch in the series scoring 72 and 107 in the first two matches - he is also the highest run-getter in ODIs this year - and the dual pressure on Sehwag as opener and captain is something Sri Lanka is hoping cash on. "The only edge we can take is if we get him [Sehwag] out early," Sangakkara said. "We will go all out and make sure that he is out cheaply."

Not that Sri Lanka have fewer worries. Sangakkara rued the loss of his in-form allrounder Angelo Mathews, who returned home on Sunday morning after straining his right quadricep muscle during the Nagpur game. "We too have received a setback. We lost out on Angelo Mathews. He has gone back home," Sangakkara said.

Sangakkara was also clear, that in the present scheme of things, it would be very difficult to slot Sanath Jayasuriya in the playing XI. Jayasuriya was pushed down the order to No. 4 in the opening match in Rajkot and sat out the following ODI. "Jayasuriya is a legend but the combination we played in Nagpur, it was hard to fit him in," Sangakkara said. "Sometimes, the combinations do not allow certain players, even some great players, to get in the side. They all take it very well. We look for direct and honest communication. It's no different to anyone.

India: (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag (capt), 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Yuvraj Singh/Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Ashish Nehra.

Given their injury concerns, it's hard to predict Sri Lanka's line-up. But Mathews' absence does pave the way for Sanath Jayasuriya's return, especially in low and slow conditions where his left-arm spin could be a big factor. Suranga Lakmal didn't impress much on debut, and there could be a recall for Nuwan Kulasekara. The big plus though would be Malinga's return. In Fernando's absence, Sri Lanka have lacked a bowler who can hurry the batsmen.

1st ODI: India v Sri Lanka at Rajkot

Tuesday, December 15
Start time 09:00 (03:30 GMT)
India, who thrashed Lanka in the Test series 2-0 before going off the boil in the first T20 which it lost in Nagpur, has regained its winning form and would be eager to show that the 2-4 loss to an injury-drained Australia team before the visit by the Lankans was an aberration.

India, currently second behind Australia in the ICC ODI ratings, have the added incentive as a clean sweep in the five-match rubber would help them narrow the gap with the front runners.

India, with 122 ratings points, are eight behind Australia and can reduce the gap to four ratings points if they whitewash the Lankans, a task easier said than done.

In the loss against Australia, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is two victims short of completing 200 dismissals as a wicket keeper in ODIs and is also closing in on the 5000-run mark with 4954 runs to his credit in 151 ties, and his men came close to winning some matches only to slip up badly to lose momentum and the series.

Dhoni didn't name India's final XI, but Yuvraj's absence at training signalled towards Virat Kohli getting a game. Sreesanth's absence may not mean an ODI debut for rookie Sudeep Tyagi, because Praveen Kumar could fill up that opening. Harbhajan will take the lead spinner's role and the allrounder's spot should go to Ravindra Jadeja.

India: (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Ashish Nehra.

Sri Lanka's line-up is likely to be significantly different from the Twenty20s, with key changes at the top and in the middle. With Jayasuriya playing in the middle order, Upul Tharanga will open. The last middle-order spot will be a toss-up between Thilan Samaraweera and Thilina Kandamby, the latter being the frontrunner.

Sri Lanka were dealt a jolt today when Lasith Malinga came down with fever and did not train at the ground. The good news, though, was that Murali is almost certain to return as the lead spinner after missing the Twenty20 internationals due to a finger injury sustained during the Mumbai Test. He showed no signs of discomfort in the nets, though he visited a hospital later for a pain-relief injection on the finger. With Angelo Mathews a guaranteed allrounder, Nuwan Kulasekara, Dilhara Fernando and Ajantha Mendis will contest two spots.

Dhoni also acknowledge India contributed to their down fall by dropping five catches and fumbling a number balls in the outfield handing Sri Lanka numerous life lines which they were happy to take.

"We are not one of the best fielding sides in the world but we are also not known to drop too many catches. Of course, the dropped catches had hurt us in the match," he said.

Despite suffering a middle order collapse Dhoni was happy with the way Yuvraj Singh and himself played suggesting risks have to be taken when you are chasing a total of 216

"In Twenty20 you had to take some risks especially when the target was high. Sehwag and Gambhir had given us a good start. But I and Yuvraj also were out at wrong time while taking some risks," he said.

"Otherwise 200 plus target is always difficult to chase in Twenty20 matches.'' Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara said this win would boost the morale of his team before the one-day series."

India will end 2009 as the number one Test side in the world and they deserve to hold that status because of their incredible depth of batting and collection of match-winning bowlers.

Test cricket is creating a huge amount of interest now as that group of sides battles it out at the top of the rankings, and those who doubt the importance of the longer format need only look at India's superb series with Sri Lanka.

I would rate Kumar Sangakkara's side as very capable of becoming the number one team in the world themselves, and the more that the likes of Ajantha Mendis and Angelo Mathews can grow in stature within that team the more dangerous they will be.India's immediate threat is South Africa, but they will have to beat England by a 2-0 margin or better to reclaim the No. 1 spot. A 2-0 or 3-1 victory for South Africa will take them marginally ahead of India, 3-0 will given them 126 points, and 4-0 will extend their lead over India by three. However, if England win 1-0 or 2-1, South Africa's tally will reduce to 117, increasing India's lead by seven points.

If South Africa fail to recapture the top spot against England, India's reign will receive an extension because even if Australia blank Pakistan 3-0 at home, following a 3-0 win against West Indies, their ratings points will increase only by three to 119. They will then need to win in New Zealand and beat Pakistan in England - an away series for Australia - to move up the ladder.

India have rested Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh from the Twenty20 internationals which means the bowling line-up is likely to be Ashish Nehra, Sreesanth, Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha. There's is a doubt over Sreesanth, though, because the bowler has an upset stomach. If he is unfit one of the rookies - Sudeep Tyagi, R Ashwin and Ashok Dinda - could get a look in.

India (possible): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Pragyan Ojha, 9 Sreesanth, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Ashish Nehra.

Murali injured ligaments in a couple of fingers while training during the third Test and is likely to be rested from the Twenty20 matches.

Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Sanath Jayasuriya, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Chamara Kapugedera, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Kaushalya Weeraratne, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Ajantha Mendis, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Chanaka Welegedara.

Sehwag raised 221 runs with his opening partner Murali Vijay (76) who rued missing a century when he was trapped by Rangana Herath 24 runs away from the mark.

"I was very positive and was hitting the ball today. But that was a poor dismissal and maybe I would not make the mistake in my next match," said the youngster.

Asked what advice he got from Sehwag during their partnership, Vijay said, "He told me to concentrate on watching the ball till the last moment and play.

Sehwag did slow down after that edge and as stumps approached but as a parting shot he crashed Dilshan through covers for his 40th four, to go with seven sixes. That's when Dravid came in, and took the majority of the strike till close of play. A fair time, then, to acknowledge Vijay, who at some other time would have been the story of the day. But when Sehwag bats like he did, you feel sorry for the bowlers, put the other batsmen in the footnote, and move on.

On balance New Zealand deserved their reward, if only because they came back so well after Butt and Imran Farhat had made Vettori's decision to bowl first look misguided early. Whether Vettori himself would have expected to end up with three wickets on a pitch offering as much turn as an ice-rink might to an early 90s Anil Kumble is open to question, but the spark for the revival was provided by the pacemen.

Things had looked difficult more than halfway into the afternoon session. First up, everyone seemed to agree that there would be mischief in the air and pitch. There wasn't. Chris Martin and Daryl Tuffey - looking every inch a man returning to Tests after nearly five years - had been tight, nothing more. Nothing moved off the pitch and the bounce was true and good. Not that it made much of a difference to the openers, as roused as two turtles on Valium.

aside from that and the 53-run stand between Umar and Misbah-ul-Haq (21) Pakistan failed to get any other partnerships going as Butt, Farhat and Mohammed Yousuf fell in quick succession.

Tuffey then dismissed Shoaib Malik, who played a loose shot, four overs after bowling Umar, who was promoted to number three.

"I think we've seen a few loose shots from them," added Tuffey.

"In the last Test and even today when they were losing wickets they were still playing the odd flamboyant shot outside off stump.

"We saw Misbah get out as well to a big hoick. That's the way they play and if we bowl enough balls in the right area these things will happen and these guys will get out."

Farhat, who was one of three Dan Vettori wickets when he sent one straight to Ross Taylor in the slips on 32, felt Pakistan were still in a reasonable position.

"The score at the moment is not bad if you look at the conditions. If we score another 100 runs it will be good because our bowling side is very good," said opener Farhat.

Dilshan's fluent 109 was the highlight of day one of the third and final India-Sri Lanka Test and the visitors rode on his century and Angelo Mathews's unbeaten 86 to reach 366 for eight at stumps.

"Angelo Mathews is still there and Muttiah Muralitharan can make 20-30 runs. If we can make 400, it would be a good total as there's pace and bounce on the wicket," said Dilshan.

"The ball was turning from the first session but it's a good Test wicket as there's something for both batsmen and bowlers in it. It has not eased out yet, there's still a lot of turn and bounce," he said.

"Already Muralitharan had started licking his lips in anticipation of a successful outing with the ball," he said.

"In the dressing room we could see him enjoying the bounce and turn (the wicket offered).

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's side battled back from a massive first-innings deficit to draw the first Test in Ahmedabad and have a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series.

Former captain Jayawardene, however, has exhorted his teammates to ensure their goal of achieving a first Test victory in India is reached.

"Our goal when we came to India was to win our first Test here," Jayawardene wrote in a column. "But the reverse in Kanpur brings our goals into sharp focus.

"The way forward is to not think too much about the defeat or over-analyse what happened but to pick ourselves up and perform as a group."

Sri Lanka's decision to field three specialist spinners in Kanpur came in for severe criticism, but Jayawardene believes the collective failure of the batsmen led to defeat.

"We took a tough call with team composition and it did not work for us," Jayawardene said.

"Over the last couple of years our batting has been reliable and we had the men to put the runs on the board.

"It just didn't happen in Kanpur and this, rather than composition was why we lost."

Sri Lanka's fast bowlers Dammika Prasad and Nuwan Kulasekara are available for selection having recovered from minor injuries and showed no signs of discomfort as they, along with Dilhara Fernando, were put through an extended session in the nets.

Master spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has struggled on this tour, the world's leading bowler only managing five wickets at an average of 79.20.

Captain Kumar Sangakkara, however, has kept his faith in the off-spinner.

"He is still the best bowler that's played the game," Sangakkara said.

"You still have to have faith in him and trust him and back him 100% to do the job because he is going to do it at some point.

"Having said that, we could do with a bit more penetration with spin."

India will be without opener Gautam Gambhir but Dhoni believes his replacement - Tamil Nadu batsman Murali Vijay is expected to fill in - will step up to the plate.

"It is difficult to say how much the team will miss Gambhir," Dhoni said.

"We are a side that depends greatly on a good start and whoever opens with (Virender) Sehwag should be able to do that.

"Whenever Gambhir and Sehwag give us a good start, the run rate is pretty high and that makes it easier for the batsmen to follow."

India also have the option of opening with Rahul Dravid, their top scorer in the series so far, and could pick an extra bowler in Gambhir's place.

This is the first Test at the Cricket Club of India's home in over 36 years and 11 of the previous 17 matches here have ended in draws.

Milind Rege, secretary of the CCI, however, has promised a good wicket.

"There is a bit of moisture and that will help the bowlers in the first hour," Rege said.

turned out to be a memorable evening for underprivileged children from 'Make A Wish Foundation' as they got to spend some fun moments with members of the Indian and Sri Lankan cricket players here today.

The occasion was a fun fair at the G D Somani School in south Mumbai, organised by the Yuvraj Singh Foundation.

While Zaheer Khan, S Sreesanth, Pragyan Ojha and Yuvraj were present from the Indian team, the Sri Lankan team was represented by skipper Kumar Sangakkara and ex-captain Mahela Jayawardene.

The children, many of them suffering from life threatening diseases, had to wait for over two hours from the scheduled time but the cricketers made up for the delay by handing them gifts of their choice, besides taking pictures with them.

"It's a great opportunity to make a few wishes of these kids possible," Yuvraj said on the occasion.

Murali Vijay is getting used to being the spare opener. Playing a Test when Gautam Gambhir feels like shouldering a bowler or when his sister is getting married or when other such equally fortuitous circumstances provide Vijay a chance. He scored 33 and 41 on Test debut last year, in the last match of the series against Australia, and ensured a recall when the need be. He will want to do better.

Of the four big Sri Lankan batsmen who landed in India without centuries to their name here, Kumar Sangakkara still remains. As a captain he will want to leave a big imprint with the bat in a must-win match.

Vijay is almost certain to take Gambhir's place in what should be the only change to the India XI that won in Kanpur. Sreesanth did have a minor injury scare, but is likely to play. "He hurt his finger a bit but it's not too serious. He would play tomorrow," said MS Dhoni.
