England v Australia 1st Twenty20

Lancashire are confident of securing one of the Pakistan-Australia Test matches next year, but their ultimate aim is to bring Ashes cricket back to a redeveloped Old Trafford. The club has submitted its bid to the ECB for one of the neutral games in 2010 and has felt bullish about its chances since the series was announced with the strong Asian links in the area an advantage.

However, while hosting the Test next summer would be a significant boost the absence of an Ashes match this season is still hurting. When Lancashire learnt they wouldn't host Australia over five days it made them realise how seriously the venue needed redeveloping.

"Since Old Trafford first hosted international cricket we have only missed out on three Ashes Tests and one of them was 2009," said Jim Cumbes, the Lancashire chief executive. "There are no guarantees, the ECB can't give any but they have been very supportive. When the work is finished this will be a wonderful stadium. The bidding process for the Ashes in 2013 is probably 12 months away and when it comes around we feel we will be a strong position

Mark Hughes fielded a strong starting XI but Neil Warnock's Championship side matched their wealthy opponents throughout the first half, before succumbing to second-half goals from Shaun Wright-Phillips and Carlos Tevez.

Speculation prior to kick-off was that Hughes would rest a host of his stars and not give a debut to new signing Joleon Lescott, but a real buzz was sent around Selhurst Park shortly before the game's commencement when the team sheet revealed that would not be the case.

Once the game started though it quickly became clear that Palace were not in awe of their opponents. Tevez sliced a shot wide inside the opening three minutes, but from there Palace had the upper hand in terms of goalscoring opportunities.

Clint Hill forced a save out of Shay Given when heading a free-kick down at the far post, and Victor Moses then made the Irishman work when making it to the by-line moments later. Defensively, Palace were alert too as Nathaniel Clyne read Tevez's attempt to feed Robinho in front of goal and intercepted.

Palace thought they were about to take the lead after 24 minutes when Shaun Derry spotted Freddie Sears's run and split the away defence with a pass, but the youngster came out worse in a duel with the experienced Given. Darren Ambrose followed up shortly after with a rasping drive that flew barely an inch over the bar from 25 yards.

Palace keeper Julian Speroni, who was a fitness doubt before this game, showed no signs of sluggishness as he was then called into action twice in quick succession, first denying Emmanuel Adebayor's curling shot before blocking Tevez at close range, but Given was the last of the two glovesmen to be busied before half-time. Alassane N'Diaye's flicked header set Sears in once more, but Given rushed out and saved the striker's nodded attempt.

The second half picked up where the first left off, but with one major exception: City clicked perfectly on the attack. Their new-found fluency brought them the lead five minutes in, as Wright-Phillips hammered a powerful finish past Speroni after Ireland had freed him with a clever overlapping pass.

Aston Villa have agreed a fee with Manchester City for defender Richard Dunne.

The 29-year-old Republic of Ireland international is now negotiating with Villa over personal terms.

Dunne's future at Eastlands looked uncertain following the arrival of Joleon Lescott from Everton this week.

He was in the team that defeated newly-promoted Wolves last weekend but that looks likely to have been his final match for City.

Club captain Dunne joined the Blues from Everton for 3million in October 2000.

It was Stuart Pearce who handed him the captain's armband at the start of the 2006/07 season.

Dunne was on the pitch for every minute of every game that season, both league and cup, and went on to land fans' player-of-the-season honours for the third successive time.

Twelve months later, he made history by picking up the coveted award for the fourth time

The 22-year-old Spain midfielder, who excelled in the 2-0 first-leg win at Parkhead on August 18, suffered a hamstring injury in the Premier League game with Portsmouth on Saturday.

"His scan was quite reassuring as he has no muscular strain but it will take a few days to settle down," Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger told the club's official website.

Fabregas could also miss the Premier League clash with champions Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, though Wenger remained optimistic he could play a part.

"There's a chance he'll be fit for Old Trafford," the Frenchman added ahead of Arsenal's return leg with Celtic.

The winners of the Champions League play-off tie will go through to the lucrative group stage.

Both Abou Diaby and Aaron Ramsey are in contention with Wenger set to rotate his side.

Czech winger Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) has returned to training and could be match fit by the weekend.

However, England forward Theo Walcott (back), reserve goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski (knee), France winger Samir Nasri (broken leg) and defender Johan Djourou (knee) all continue their rehabilitation.

Celtic boss Tony Mowbray will take no notice of the convincing home win over St Johnstone when he writes out the team lines ahead of the clash at the Emirates Stadium.

Few give the Hoops a chance in London, but they warmed up with a 5-2 win over the Scottish Premier League new boys at Celtic Park.

Sean Thornton will miss Leyton Orient's Carling Cup meeting with Premier League Stoke at Brisbane Road, but fellow midfielder Adam Chambers has been added to the squad for the second-round encounter.

Former Sunderland playmaker Thornton missed Saturday's 3-3 draw at Yeovil after twisting his knee against Charlton in midweek.

Ex-West Brom midfielder Chambers makes a welcome return, though, and could be in line for his first appearance of the season after overcoming a calf injury.

Loanee Andros Townsend has been given permission to play by parent club Tottenham, while Ryan Jarvis is pressing for a start after climbing off the bench to earn the Os a point at the weekend.

Rookie Darryl Sydes is the only other injury absentee with an ankle problem.

Stoke manager Tony Pulis is set to give some of his fringe players a run-out at Brisbane Road.

Dave Kitson could be recalled to the attack as James Beattie suffered a knee problem in the draw against Birmingham on Saturday.

Andy Griffin, Danny Pugh, Carl Dickinson and Leon Cort might all feature in the second-round match at Brisbane Road.

The Shrimpers had the better chances throughout the course of the 90 minutes but it was Millwall who nearly claimed the three points late on as Gary Alexander saw an effort cleared off the line.

Both teams remain unbeaten in the league this season following the stalemate and Lions boss Jackett believes his side merited their third draw of the campaign.

"It was a hard-fought game and I think we had the best chances with the effort which was cleared off the line, but in the end we did not do enough to win," he said.

Newcastle finished the day in second place behind Middlesbrough on goal difference after a convincing 2-0 away win over Crystal Palace - their first in the league since February.

Kevin Nolan's first goal for the club put Newcastle in front after just two minutes to make light of their off-the-field problems.

United went further ahead in the 21st minute thanks to a stunning drive into the top corner by Ryan Taylor and Palace could not find a way back into the game.

Preston left visitors Peterborough one off the bottom with a 2-0 win at Deepdale. Preston went ahead through former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor and Billy Jones added a second on the half-hour to give North End a comfortable victory.

But Coventry slumped to ninth in the table after losing to struggling Swansea 1-0 at the Ricoh Stadium. Sammy Clingan missed a 12th-minute spot-kick for the Sky Blues and they paid the penalty when Wales international defender Ashley Williams scored the decider for the Swans in the 69th minute to record their first win of the season.

Sheffield United climbed the table with a fine 3-1 away win at troubled Reading. The home side scored their first league goal of the season through Matthew Mills in the 13th minute to give them a first-half advantage. But they could not sustain the lead and Stephen Quinn levelled before the break. Second-half strikes from Jamie Ward and a last-minute effort from David Cotterill sealed the win.

A 53rd-minute goal from prolific scorer Matty Fryatt earned Leicester a 1-0 win over bottom club Barnsley.

QPR shared a 1-1 draw with struggling Nottingham Forest at Loftus Road. Mikele Leigertwood put the home side ahead in the 25th minute but David McGoldrick equalised in the 56th minute.

The young winger trained with his new team-mates for the first time on Thursday morning after joining from Wolves for an undisclosed fee.

Albion will be without striker Glenn Murray, who needs another hernia operation and is likely to be out for at least three weeks.

Goalkeeper Michel Kuipers serves a one-match ban following the sending-off which sparked Tuesday's 7-1 mauling at Huddersfield, so Graeme Smith takes the gloves.

Midfielder Andrew Crofts is rated 50-50 with a leg injury after being clattered against the Terriers.

Jake Wright has a hamstring strain, fellow left-back Jim McNulty turned his ankle in training and forward Gary Hart is still out with a toe injury.

Stockport manager Gary Ablett has sought special dispensation from the Football League to play Liam Bridcutt.

Under League rules, clubs in administration cannot sign players if they have 20 or more professionals already on their books.

Captain Shane Duff and influential team-mates Oliver Bozanic, Elvis Hammond and Drissa Diallo all sustained injuries during Saturday's dramatic 5-4 defeat to Bradford, adding to the knee problem Micheal Pook picked up against Hereford.

Bozanic has returned to parent club Reading for treatment on his knee ligament damage, Duff is set to undergo a scan on a calf problem, Hammond damaged ankle ligaments and Diallo also sustained an ankle problem.

But Allen told the Gloucestershire Echo: "I can't look at the transfer market because we don't have any money.

"Let`s not kid ourselves. We all knew that when we started. We're at our budget limits as set by the chairman and we have to respect that. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

"A couple of the injuries don't look too good, but I'm not going to comment until we've had the scans done. We need those players playing, but that isn't going to happen for a while I don't think."

The 27-year-old worked his way through non-league and the lower divisions before finally joining football's elite with Hull last season. Now having moved along the M62 for his second season in the top flight, he faces an early return to the KC Stadium with Bolton.

He told Press Association Sport: "I appreciate things more because of my background. In non-league you have to muck in and get on with it. So when someone does something for you, it is nice."

Wales full-back Ricketts has fond memories of his time working with manager Phil Brown.

He said: "I had three progressive years at the club and they were thoroughly enjoyable. The first year we just stayed up, the second year we got promoted and last year we managed to stay in the Premier League.

"Hull grew a lot under the manager and I felt I improved with every season. But you only enjoy going back to your old club if you win. If you lose it is the worst place to be."

1st Test day 2 Live Streaming

at Galle - Aug 18-22
Sri Lanka 293/3

A wonderfully composed 26th Test century from Mahela Jayawardene and a thrill-a-minute 92 from Tillakaratne Dilshan allowed Sri Lanka to dominate the opening day's play after two early wickets from Chris Martin had given New Zealand the perfect start in overcast conditions in Galle. Thilan Samaraweera weighed in with an unbeaten 82, adding 159 with Jayawardene, and by the time the players went off for bad light, New Zealand were down for the count.

The start had been delayed by 90 minutes and the New Zealanders had reason to feel smug 40 minutes after winning the toss, but a rapid 118-run stand quickly wiped the smiles off their faces. Dilshan drove and cut like a dream, and at a pace that made you wonder whether he was practising for the Delhi Daredevils' Champions League campaign later this year. The fastest century ever by a Sri Lankan was easily within reach when he cut a delivery from Iain O'Brien back on to the stumps. By then, he had 92 from 72 balls, and the hapless O'Brien had gone at more than nine an over.

Jayawardene's approach was much less helter-skelter and far more measured. There were the characteristically lovely drives through the covers and the beautiful late twirls of the wrist that sent the ball to third man, but there were also periods of dogged defence against the accurate left-arm spin of Daniel Vettori. There was a period after tea when he appeared bereft of inspiration, but once he stepped out to off-drive Vettori for four, the fluency came surging back.
