Dhoni was named in the squad for the final ODI, which should mean India have no intentions of resting him. His coming back should be the only change in the batting line-up, because India don't have any reserve batsmen. Harbhajan Singh could be rested, though, and this would be the best opportunity to give Sudeep Tyagi a debut.

India: (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Pragyan Ojha, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Sudeep Tyagi, 11 Ashish Nehra.

Their opening problem solved, Sri Lanka are left looking for one more middle-order mainstay to go with Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. Chamara Kapugedera, Thilan Samaraweera and Jayasuriya have all disappointed there, and that will be the only major decision to make. Thissara Perera and Suranga Lakmal should retain their places, while Lasith Malinga will be under pressure to hold his.

Sri Lanka: (probable) 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt/wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 and 6 two out of Sanath Jayasuriya, Chamara Kapugedera and Thilan Samaraweera, 7 Thilina Kandamby, 8 Thissara Perera, 9 Suraj Randiv, 10 Lasith Malinga/Ajantha Mendis, 11 Suranga Lakmal.

Jayasuriya Return to 4th Odi Match

In the absence of in-from all-rounder Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka struggled in Cuttack in the third one-dayer and the visitors might be forced to bring in the once explosive opening batsman at Eden Gardens on Thursday.

India eye series win at Eden Gardens

The team management gave a lot of focus on the 40-year-old left-hander in the practice session on Wednesday and he spent a considerable amount of time batting at the nets.

Team coach Trevor Bayliss was, however, non-committal when asked whether a Sachin (Tendulkar) vs Sanath Jayasuriya battle is on the cards.

"There is always a chance. But, we have not finalised the team yet. In the last two games, we wanted to play with two genuine spinners. Unfortunately, that meant Sanath missing the spot there," he said.

"The pitch seems to be a very good batting wicket, promising plenty of runs," Bayliss said.

Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and in-form Tillakaratne Dilshan did not attend the optional practice on Wednesday.

With Dilshan effectively doing the job Jayasuriya had been doing earlier -- giving Sri Lanka an explosive start, the latter could be used in the middle order once again after the first ODI at Rajkot.

But Jayasuriya, it seemed, is yet to relish the role of a middle-order batsman.

Jayasuriya has some good memories at the Eden with the left-hander scoring a breezy 63 not out before rain washed out the match against India that the stadium hosted last on February 8, 2007.

Sri Lanka don't have any new fitness worries but they need to address their middle-order problems. Chamara Kapugedera struggled for fluency in Cuttack before a loose shot sent him back, and Sri Lanka should really reconsider Sanath Jayasuriya over Thilan Samaraweera not least because of the left-arm spinning option he creates.

Sri Lanka: 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt/wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Sanath Jayasuriya/Chamara Kapugedera, 6 Thilina Kandamby, 7 Nuwan Kulasekara, 8 Suraj Randiv, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Chanaka Welegedara.

Dhoni been in great touch in the series scoring 72 and 107 in the first two matches - he is also the highest run-getter in ODIs this year - and the dual pressure on Sehwag as opener and captain is something Sri Lanka is hoping cash on. "The only edge we can take is if we get him [Sehwag] out early," Sangakkara said. "We will go all out and make sure that he is out cheaply."

Not that Sri Lanka have fewer worries. Sangakkara rued the loss of his in-form allrounder Angelo Mathews, who returned home on Sunday morning after straining his right quadricep muscle during the Nagpur game. "We too have received a setback. We lost out on Angelo Mathews. He has gone back home," Sangakkara said.

Sangakkara was also clear, that in the present scheme of things, it would be very difficult to slot Sanath Jayasuriya in the playing XI. Jayasuriya was pushed down the order to No. 4 in the opening match in Rajkot and sat out the following ODI. "Jayasuriya is a legend but the combination we played in Nagpur, it was hard to fit him in," Sangakkara said. "Sometimes, the combinations do not allow certain players, even some great players, to get in the side. They all take it very well. We look for direct and honest communication. It's no different to anyone.

Given their injury concerns, it's hard to predict Sri Lanka's line-up. But Mathews' absence does pave the way for Sanath Jayasuriya's return, especially in low and slow conditions where his left-arm spin could be a big factor. Suranga Lakmal didn't impress much on debut, and there could be a recall for Nuwan Kulasekara. The big plus though would be Malinga's return. In Fernando's absence, Sri Lanka have lacked a bowler who can hurry the batsmen.

1st ODI: India v Sri Lanka at Rajkot

Tuesday, December 15
Start time 09:00 (03:30 GMT)
India, who thrashed Lanka in the Test series 2-0 before going off the boil in the first T20 which it lost in Nagpur, has regained its winning form and would be eager to show that the 2-4 loss to an injury-drained Australia team before the visit by the Lankans was an aberration.

India, currently second behind Australia in the ICC ODI ratings, have the added incentive as a clean sweep in the five-match rubber would help them narrow the gap with the front runners.

India, with 122 ratings points, are eight behind Australia and can reduce the gap to four ratings points if they whitewash the Lankans, a task easier said than done.

In the loss against Australia, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is two victims short of completing 200 dismissals as a wicket keeper in ODIs and is also closing in on the 5000-run mark with 4954 runs to his credit in 151 ties, and his men came close to winning some matches only to slip up badly to lose momentum and the series.

Dhoni didn't name India's final XI, but Yuvraj's absence at training signalled towards Virat Kohli getting a game. Sreesanth's absence may not mean an ODI debut for rookie Sudeep Tyagi, because Praveen Kumar could fill up that opening. Harbhajan will take the lead spinner's role and the allrounder's spot should go to Ravindra Jadeja.

India: (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Ashish Nehra.

Sri Lanka's line-up is likely to be significantly different from the Twenty20s, with key changes at the top and in the middle. With Jayasuriya playing in the middle order, Upul Tharanga will open. The last middle-order spot will be a toss-up between Thilan Samaraweera and Thilina Kandamby, the latter being the frontrunner.

Sri Lanka were dealt a jolt today when Lasith Malinga came down with fever and did not train at the ground. The good news, though, was that Murali is almost certain to return as the lead spinner after missing the Twenty20 internationals due to a finger injury sustained during the Mumbai Test. He showed no signs of discomfort in the nets, though he visited a hospital later for a pain-relief injection on the finger. With Angelo Mathews a guaranteed allrounder, Nuwan Kulasekara, Dilhara Fernando and Ajantha Mendis will contest two spots.

Dhoni also acknowledge India contributed to their down fall by dropping five catches and fumbling a number balls in the outfield handing Sri Lanka numerous life lines which they were happy to take.

"We are not one of the best fielding sides in the world but we are also not known to drop too many catches. Of course, the dropped catches had hurt us in the match," he said.

Despite suffering a middle order collapse Dhoni was happy with the way Yuvraj Singh and himself played suggesting risks have to be taken when you are chasing a total of 216

"In Twenty20 you had to take some risks especially when the target was high. Sehwag and Gambhir had given us a good start. But I and Yuvraj also were out at wrong time while taking some risks," he said.

"Otherwise 200 plus target is always difficult to chase in Twenty20 matches.'' Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara said this win would boost the morale of his team before the one-day series."

India will end 2009 as the number one Test side in the world and they deserve to hold that status because of their incredible depth of batting and collection of match-winning bowlers.

Test cricket is creating a huge amount of interest now as that group of sides battles it out at the top of the rankings, and those who doubt the importance of the longer format need only look at India's superb series with Sri Lanka.

I would rate Kumar Sangakkara's side as very capable of becoming the number one team in the world themselves, and the more that the likes of Ajantha Mendis and Angelo Mathews can grow in stature within that team the more dangerous they will be.India's immediate threat is South Africa, but they will have to beat England by a 2-0 margin or better to reclaim the No. 1 spot. A 2-0 or 3-1 victory for South Africa will take them marginally ahead of India, 3-0 will given them 126 points, and 4-0 will extend their lead over India by three. However, if England win 1-0 or 2-1, South Africa's tally will reduce to 117, increasing India's lead by seven points.

If South Africa fail to recapture the top spot against England, India's reign will receive an extension because even if Australia blank Pakistan 3-0 at home, following a 3-0 win against West Indies, their ratings points will increase only by three to 119. They will then need to win in New Zealand and beat Pakistan in England - an away series for Australia - to move up the ladder.

India have rested Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh from the Twenty20 internationals which means the bowling line-up is likely to be Ashish Nehra, Sreesanth, Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha. There's is a doubt over Sreesanth, though, because the bowler has an upset stomach. If he is unfit one of the rookies - Sudeep Tyagi, R Ashwin and Ashok Dinda - could get a look in.

India (possible): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Pragyan Ojha, 9 Sreesanth, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Ashish Nehra.

Murali injured ligaments in a couple of fingers while training during the third Test and is likely to be rested from the Twenty20 matches.

Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Sanath Jayasuriya, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Chamara Kapugedera, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Kaushalya Weeraratne, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Ajantha Mendis, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Chanaka Welegedara.

Sehwag raised 221 runs with his opening partner Murali Vijay (76) who rued missing a century when he was trapped by Rangana Herath 24 runs away from the mark.

"I was very positive and was hitting the ball today. But that was a poor dismissal and maybe I would not make the mistake in my next match," said the youngster.

Asked what advice he got from Sehwag during their partnership, Vijay said, "He told me to concentrate on watching the ball till the last moment and play.

Sehwag did slow down after that edge and as stumps approached but as a parting shot he crashed Dilshan through covers for his 40th four, to go with seven sixes. That's when Dravid came in, and took the majority of the strike till close of play. A fair time, then, to acknowledge Vijay, who at some other time would have been the story of the day. But when Sehwag bats like he did, you feel sorry for the bowlers, put the other batsmen in the footnote, and move on.

New Zealand vs Pakistan 2nd Test day 2 Live Streaming

On balance New Zealand deserved their reward, if only because they came back so well after Butt and Imran Farhat had made Vettori's decision to bowl first look misguided early. Whether Vettori himself would have expected to end up with three wickets on a pitch offering as much turn as an ice-rink might to an early 90s Anil Kumble is open to question, but the spark for the revival was provided by the pacemen.

Things had looked difficult more than halfway into the afternoon session. First up, everyone seemed to agree that there would be mischief in the air and pitch. There wasn't. Chris Martin and Daryl Tuffey - looking every inch a man returning to Tests after nearly five years - had been tight, nothing more. Nothing moved off the pitch and the bounce was true and good. Not that it made much of a difference to the openers, as roused as two turtles on Valium.

aside from that and the 53-run stand between Umar and Misbah-ul-Haq (21) Pakistan failed to get any other partnerships going as Butt, Farhat and Mohammed Yousuf fell in quick succession.

Tuffey then dismissed Shoaib Malik, who played a loose shot, four overs after bowling Umar, who was promoted to number three.

"I think we've seen a few loose shots from them," added Tuffey.

"In the last Test and even today when they were losing wickets they were still playing the odd flamboyant shot outside off stump.

"We saw Misbah get out as well to a big hoick. That's the way they play and if we bowl enough balls in the right area these things will happen and these guys will get out."

Farhat, who was one of three Dan Vettori wickets when he sent one straight to Ross Taylor in the slips on 32, felt Pakistan were still in a reasonable position.

"The score at the moment is not bad if you look at the conditions. If we score another 100 runs it will be good because our bowling side is very good," said opener Farhat.

Dilshan's fluent 109 was the highlight of day one of the third and final India-Sri Lanka Test and the visitors rode on his century and Angelo Mathews's unbeaten 86 to reach 366 for eight at stumps.

"Angelo Mathews is still there and Muttiah Muralitharan can make 20-30 runs. If we can make 400, it would be a good total as there's pace and bounce on the wicket," said Dilshan.

"The ball was turning from the first session but it's a good Test wicket as there's something for both batsmen and bowlers in it. It has not eased out yet, there's still a lot of turn and bounce," he said.

"Already Muralitharan had started licking his lips in anticipation of a successful outing with the ball," he said.

"In the dressing room we could see him enjoying the bounce and turn (the wicket offered).

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's side battled back from a massive first-innings deficit to draw the first Test in Ahmedabad and have a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series.

Former captain Jayawardene, however, has exhorted his teammates to ensure their goal of achieving a first Test victory in India is reached.

"Our goal when we came to India was to win our first Test here," Jayawardene wrote in a column. "But the reverse in Kanpur brings our goals into sharp focus.

"The way forward is to not think too much about the defeat or over-analyse what happened but to pick ourselves up and perform as a group."

Sri Lanka's decision to field three specialist spinners in Kanpur came in for severe criticism, but Jayawardene believes the collective failure of the batsmen led to defeat.

"We took a tough call with team composition and it did not work for us," Jayawardene said.

"Over the last couple of years our batting has been reliable and we had the men to put the runs on the board.

"It just didn't happen in Kanpur and this, rather than composition was why we lost."

Sri Lanka's fast bowlers Dammika Prasad and Nuwan Kulasekara are available for selection having recovered from minor injuries and showed no signs of discomfort as they, along with Dilhara Fernando, were put through an extended session in the nets.

Master spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has struggled on this tour, the world's leading bowler only managing five wickets at an average of 79.20.

Captain Kumar Sangakkara, however, has kept his faith in the off-spinner.

"He is still the best bowler that's played the game," Sangakkara said.

"You still have to have faith in him and trust him and back him 100% to do the job because he is going to do it at some point.

"Having said that, we could do with a bit more penetration with spin."

India will be without opener Gautam Gambhir but Dhoni believes his replacement - Tamil Nadu batsman Murali Vijay is expected to fill in - will step up to the plate.

"It is difficult to say how much the team will miss Gambhir," Dhoni said.

"We are a side that depends greatly on a good start and whoever opens with (Virender) Sehwag should be able to do that.

"Whenever Gambhir and Sehwag give us a good start, the run rate is pretty high and that makes it easier for the batsmen to follow."

India also have the option of opening with Rahul Dravid, their top scorer in the series so far, and could pick an extra bowler in Gambhir's place.

This is the first Test at the Cricket Club of India's home in over 36 years and 11 of the previous 17 matches here have ended in draws.

Milind Rege, secretary of the CCI, however, has promised a good wicket.

"There is a bit of moisture and that will help the bowlers in the first hour," Rege said.

turned out to be a memorable evening for underprivileged children from 'Make A Wish Foundation' as they got to spend some fun moments with members of the Indian and Sri Lankan cricket players here today.

The occasion was a fun fair at the G D Somani School in south Mumbai, organised by the Yuvraj Singh Foundation.

While Zaheer Khan, S Sreesanth, Pragyan Ojha and Yuvraj were present from the Indian team, the Sri Lankan team was represented by skipper Kumar Sangakkara and ex-captain Mahela Jayawardene.

The children, many of them suffering from life threatening diseases, had to wait for over two hours from the scheduled time but the cricketers made up for the delay by handing them gifts of their choice, besides taking pictures with them.

"It's a great opportunity to make a few wishes of these kids possible," Yuvraj said on the occasion.

Murali Vijay is getting used to being the spare opener. Playing a Test when Gautam Gambhir feels like shouldering a bowler or when his sister is getting married or when other such equally fortuitous circumstances provide Vijay a chance. He scored 33 and 41 on Test debut last year, in the last match of the series against Australia, and ensured a recall when the need be. He will want to do better.

Of the four big Sri Lankan batsmen who landed in India without centuries to their name here, Kumar Sangakkara still remains. As a captain he will want to leave a big imprint with the bat in a must-win match.

Vijay is almost certain to take Gambhir's place in what should be the only change to the India XI that won in Kanpur. Sreesanth did have a minor injury scare, but is likely to play. "He hurt his finger a bit but it's not too serious. He would play tomorrow," said MS Dhoni.

He has been consistently in good form over the past one-and-half years and whenever the team needed, he delivered.
Once he sets himself well, he goes for big innings," added the captain.
Dhoni was his usual coy self when asked about team combination.
"It has always been an issue in the media but you have to wait till tomorrow," he said.
Asked how he rated S Sreesanth in the nets, Dhoni said the Kerala speedster was impressive but also sprang in defence of Ishant Sharma that revealed little about his preference if it comes to chose one between them.
"Sreesanth has bowled well in the nets. He bowled with great pace and swung it a lot but we will have to wait till tomorrow," Dhoni said.
"Ishant, meanwhile, is back in rhythm, as we saw in Ahmedabad. He is putting in a lot of efforts and the improvement is there to see," he said.
After the runfeast in Ahmedabad, Dhoni reckoned the pitch at the Green Park Stadium here would have more for the bowlers.
"Compared to Motera, the pitch here looks different. It has got some grass and the base is dry. But you cannot really predict how the wicket would play the next five days.
"Here the weather is cooler and as we know, initially there would be some help for the seamers. The outfield is nor lush, so there would be some reverse swing for the fast bowlers. It will break as well. Overall, I feel it would be a better wicket for the bowlers," he explained.

jayawardene notched up the highest run-aggregate for Sri Lanka against India in Tests, overtaking Aravinda de Silva's run-aggregate of 1252 (ave.41.73) in 19 Tests.

Jayawardene's runs' tally of 1365 (ave.80.29) in 13 Tests is now the second best in India-Sri Lanka Tests, next only to Sachin Tendulkar's run-aggregate of 1412 (ave.54.20) in 20 Tests.

Apart from the feat, Jayawardene set a few important landmarks during the course of his Ahmedabad double hundred:

The visitors, who had resumed on 275 for three, ended the third day in dominant position at 591 for five, a lead of 165 over India's first innings total of 426.

Sri Lanka's innings revolved around Mahela Jayawardene's classy innings.

The 32-year-old, who relinquished the captaincy in March this year to concentrate on his batting, played with skill and panache although he was never really troubled by India's lacklustre bowlers.

India had begun with spin from both ends in the morning and, while Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra produced considerable turn, they lacked sting.

Welegedara, playing only his second Test match, exploited the moisture in the pitch in the morning to prise out Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar cheaply.

Dammika Prasad, who had shared the new ball with Welegedara, added to the destruction by bowling VVS Laxman via an inside edge as India crumbled.

Dravid was then joined by Yuvraj and they pieced together India's recovery.

Although Yuvraj was watchful once master spinner Muttiah Muralitharan was introduced, the runs flowed steadily.

Dravid even clubbed left-arm spinner Rangana Herath for a rare six and reached his half-century off just 79 deliveries.

This was a very different Dravid. From the moment he placed one from Dammika Prasad through the covers, the positive intent was evident. But unlike many of his modern-day contemporaries, who use bats as thick as arks and prefer to stand-and-deliver, there was nothing frenetic or brutal about his methods. Dravid bats the old-fashioned way, bending his knee and transferring the body weight at just the right time. Each of the 13 fours he drove in the arc between point and long off was crowned with the perfect follow-through.

Even late in the day, with the second new-ball taken, he chose his battles carefully. He invariably got into line for each delivery, and was perfectly content to leave off-stump bait well alone. "I knew we needed a partnership," he said later, having spent some time in the ice-bath to recover from the day's exertions. "I had that South African game [April 2008] at the back of my mind, where we were bowled out in 20 overs and the wicket became good later on.

"I knew that if we could get through to lunch, batting would get a lot easier. Yuvi [Yuvraj Singh] came and batted really well. He was very positive and played some good shots. We were able to put on a 100-run partnership and that set the platform for me and Mahi [MS Dhoni]. We showed character today to be able to fight back."

As the entire country is celebrating Sachin Tendulkar's 20 years in international cricket on Sunday, Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara says that Brian Lara was a better batsman than both Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting.

Speaking at a press conference in Ahmedabad on Saturday, before the first Test between India and Sri Lanka begins on Monday at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Sangakkara said: "Sachin Tendulkar is a great batsman. Can anyone doubt it? Whoever plays international cricket for 20 years has to be a special player. It's been a privilege playing against him. His records will tell you that he is a phenomenal player, but in my opinion Lara was a better batsman."
The Indian team has had a non-stop dish of limited-over cricket, 50-over and Twenty20, over the last six months and played their last Test series against New Zealand in March-April early this year.

The Indian middle order has been bolstered by the return of Test specialists Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, who were not part of the squad that lost to Australia after squandering a 2-1 lead by losing the next three matches in-a-row.

Both Dravid and Laxman, especially the former, are coming into the match on the back of some good displays in the Ranji Trophy and would be eager to hit the straps.

Thilan Samaraweera has had a year to remember, as 1083 runs in Tests attest; he's the highest run-getter this year. While his new avatar has seen him turn into a run-machine at home, Samaraweera's record in India is one he will be desperate to improve on. In three Tests here, he has scored 42 runs at 10.50, with 35 coming in one unbeaten innings.

Zaheer Khan has recovered from the shoulder injury he sustained during the ICC World Twenty20 which ruled him out of all of India's series since. He featured in Twenty20 matches during the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament and a Ranji Trophy fixture, but it remains to be seen how he shapes up over five days. He has been India's best fast bowler for some time and they need him to be back at his best.

Sevilla's tricky winger Diego Capel could make the starting line-up, after debuting against Denmark - the only major change from the Aragones era.

Spain have never lost to Bosnia but only took two points off them in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, drawing 1-1 home and away.

Bosnia coach Miroslav Blazevic is without injured captain and defender Emir Spahic as they set out to qualify for their first major tournament, but is not overawed by the challenge.

"Regardless of the fact we are playing the European champions, I am sure we can achieve something against them. I am pleased with the determination shown by my players," he said.

We do not have a problem with a joint bid for Euro 2016. If it were France, it would be a friendly and neighbouring country. If it were not technically and politically possible, we would go ahead alone," Giancarlo Abete told Italian radio.

"With great transparency, we want to check if a way forward can be found. If it is not possible, we are not scared of competing by ourselves."

Italy missed out on Euro 2012 to Ukraine and Poland partly because of the decaying state of many Serie A stadiums, which were built or refurbished for the 1990 World Cup.

Huge investment in difficult economic times would be needed to revamp Italy's footballing infrastructure, making the idea of a joint bid more appealing.

There is no love lost between Italy and France on the field and off it, with the teams having a long-standing football rivalry.

r New Zealand yesterday when Aaron Redmond limped off the field with a groin injury and didn't come out to bat. Fortunately, they managed to find 11 fit men in the deciding game today, with the allrounder James Franklin replacing Redmond. Franklin missed the first match due to an injury but was forced to come out and field because New Zealand were so severely depleted. Pakistan, on the other hand, were unchanged today.

Pakistan have a big incentive to win tonight, for it will equal South Africa's record of seven consecutive wins. That aside, it will also compensate for the 2-1 defeat in the ODIs. With New Zealand a touch low on confidence and manpower, Pakistan will start as favourites.

Over the years, Sachin has played several outstanding innings in Tests and ODIs, the latest being 175 off 141 balls - an innings embellished with four sixes and nineteen fours - at a strike rate of 124.11 against Australia at Hyderabad on November 5, 2009. He had reached his hundred off 81 balls, establishing in the process an Indian record for the fastest hundred against Australia.

During his 45th hundred, Sachin became the first batsman to complete 17,000 runs in ODIs apart from establishing several records in the process. His run-aggregate of 2995 (ave.46.79) in 66 ODIs against Australia is now the highest by any batsman against any opponent.

Although Sachin finished on the losing side while posting his 45th century, he became the first player to post nine hundreds against Australia, which is a record for most hundreds against any opponent in ODIs.

A worn-out Mitchell Johnson, who was rested from the last game, is no certainty to return. A handful of players are nursing sore bodies and Ponting indicated the replacements for Henriques and Siddle, the allrounder Andrew McDonald and fast bowler Burt Cockley, could do well given the conditions. "Macca [McDonald] has been over here with the Champions League and did a really good job for Victoria," he said. "His style of bowling on this sort of wicket would be very good, stump to stump and taking pace off the ball all the time, that's what you need on the slower, lower types of wickets."

Clint McKay performed creditably on debut, snaring three wickets including the decisive one of Tendulkar for 175 with a crafty slow bouncer. One bad game for Hauritz won't put pressure on Australia to blood the rookie spinner Jon Holland.

India vs Australia 2nd odi Live From Nagpur

Virender Sehwag: He hadn't played international cricket since the tour of New Zealand earlier this year and his first two balls in Vadodara reminded everyone of what India had missed. Sehwag cracked Lee through point and midwicket for fours and added another boundary, against Peter Siddle, a ball later. However, he didn't carry on and his brief innings - 13 off 11 balls - would have merely whetted his appetite.

Yuvraj Singh: On his day, Yuvraj is among the most destructive one-day batsmen, and his days tend to happen more often at home than abroad. Yuvraj averages 43 at a strike-rate of nearly 95 while playing in India, compared to an average and strike-rate of 39 and 84 overseas. In his last one-day series in India, he devastated England, hammering 325 runs in five innings at a strike-rate of nearly 130.

The batting Powerplay: Both teams struggled after taking it in Vadodara. Australia managed only 33 runs off theirs, taken between 43 and 47, and lost three wickets. India were worse. They opted for it in the 35th over, lost Gautam Gambhir first ball, and scored 32 for 3 during the fielding restrictions.

Nathan Hauritz: Watch out for Hauritz? Really? His seemingly gentle offbreaks are always under-rated but he bowled a valuable spell in the first ODI. He kept the run-rate down during the Dhoni-Gambhir partnership and had figures of 7-1-15-1 before getting hit by Harbhajan Singh towards the end of the game. He was not the most heralded spinner in the series but he was the best one on show in Vadodara.

Explosive middle-order batsman Yuvraj Singh has recovered from a finger injury and is available for Wednesday's second one-day international against Australia in Nagpur, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni confirmed on Tuesday.

Yuvraj sustained the injury during practice ahead of the match against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy in South Africa. He was included in the squad for the series against Australia but was forced to sit out the opener which the tourists edged by four runs.

"Yuvraj has been the backbone of our batting line-up, especially because he bats at number four and at a time when the ball is changed and the second powerplay comes into the picture," said Dhoni.

"Someone with the capabilities of Yuvraj at that stage is a huge help and it's not just his batting, but his bowling as well.

"With him around you have the luxury of another part-time bowler so even if the others have a poor day, you have one more option."

Yuvraj Singh is not a certain starter for the first of the seven-match ODI series against Australia, beginning Sunday in Vadodara. Yuvraj, who picked up a finger injury in the lead-up to the Champions Trophy in South Africa last month, and has been out of action since, batted and fielded in the nets on the eve of the match.
However, India are likely to play safe and not risk a hurried return. MS Dhoni, India's captain, did not give too much away when asked about Yuvraj's status. "All I can say is that Yuvraj will surely be available for the second match," Dhoni said.
Asked if Yuvraj's unavailability for the opening game was always going to be the case when the squad was selected, Dhoni refused to comment on the playing XI. "You will get to know about it tomorrow."
During practice sessions ahead of the series, Dhoni and Suresh Raina too got hit in the nets, but the 'niggles' don't seem to be a concern right now. "Well, most of the guys are fit, to be precise," Dhoni said. "At times you get injured during the practice sessions, and that is part and parcel of the game, but if it happens too many times in the same span, you can say you are a bit unlucky. Most of the guys have small niggles, but they are not major injuries

Australia don't have Clarke and might use Marsh to stabilise the middle order. Ponting has said the final eleven will be only decided on the morning of the game. Marsh might be able to fill in for Clarke, but Australia will sorely miss the services of Nathan Bracken and his slower cutters which perfectly suits the Indian conditions. However, they do have in Doug Bollinger, who has played in India for Australia A and for New South Wales.

Brazil vs Costa Rica Semi finals Live Streaming Watch Online

Costa Rica are to prevail against Brazil in the semi-final of FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009 tomorrow night, they will have to avoid the mistakes that saw them routed by the same opponents in their opening game of the group stage. Los Ticos bounced back from that painful 5-0 reverse to embark on an historic campaign here in north Africa, but there will be no margin for error in Cairo this Tuesday.

So what will be the key to a different result this time? "We'll need to be smarter and pack more of a punch. We also need to punish them when we get the chance as they're simply ruthless. We learned that the hard way. If there's one thing I'm sure about, it's that we won't be gifting them anything," says Marcos Urena, who netted his side's quarter-final winner against UAE in the dying seconds of extra time.

"I don't know if I'd go that far," the player told in response to the suggestion that he had been the hero of the hour. "What do I recall about the goal? The truth is that I was shattered by then and my legs were gone. Still I managed to keep up with the play and, when I saw the ball teed up in front of me, my only thought was to hit it hard and goalwards. And that's exactly what I did. I still don't know where I got the energy to celebrate it - some inner strength maybe," recalls the Liga Deportiva Alajuelense youth academy graduate with a broad smile.

Saturday's triumph over UAE was the second game in succession that Costa Rica had run out at the International Stadium in Cairo to face a partisan crowd - and the second time they came up trumps. "Against Egypt we were playing against 70,000 fans but we got the job done. Against the Emirates, even though there was a smaller crowd, it was still obvious they were rooting for our opponents. However, we showed a lot of heart and commitment, and also how much it means to pull on this jersey," says the pacy front-man with the powerful right foot.

We were hoping to get another shot at Brazil. Our opening game was a nightmare for all of us, but for me in particular, as I played very poorly.

Marcos Urena, Costa Rica midfielder.

Urena admits the team have some work to do in defence ahead of the Brazil clash and cites a good example from the UAE match. "Beforehand we all knew they'd try to get at us down the flanks and cut balls back. So how did they score? Of course, with a break down the right and a cut-back!" he says incredulously.

"Equalising so soon afterwards gave us a real shot in the arm as we'd started sluggishly. But we never thought we'd let is slip as we're very strong defensively. We felt the only way they could score would be with a shot from distance, and they didn't really try to do that until late on," adds the 19-year-old.

Urena was typically vocal during the quarter-final and could frequently be seen urging his team-mates on. "I kept telling them, ‘Stay strong at the back as when our chance comes we'll score and go on to win this. And that's how it happened." For the striker, however, the group's maturity has been the key to their success. "We prepared conscientiously like everyone did, but perhaps we were able to make better use of our top-flight club experience than some of the other sides," explained the player who made his professional first-team debut at just 16.

US OPEN Final -Juan Martin Del Potro v Roger Federer

The 20-year-old Del Potro denied an anticipated Federer match-up with Rafael Nadal by blitzing the Spaniard 6-2 6-2 6-2 in their semi-final on Sunday.

"I'm very happy to beat Rafa in straight sets. I played an unbelievable match," said Del Potro, who admitted the US Open is his favourite tournament. "Of course it's great for me and for my future being in finals.

"I'm very close to doing it. I've always dreamed of this moment."

The Argentine is a dangerous hardcourt player, one who hits the ball flat but extremely hard with sharp angles.

"Del Potro had a great match today against Rafa, because Rafa doesn't give you any easy matches," said Federer, shooting for his 16th Grand Slam win. "So for him to come through the way he did, it's, to say the least, impressive.

"That's why he's not to be underestimated."

Brendon Kuruppu, Sri Lanka's manager, said that Murali could have played on Saturday but that the management wanted to give him the extra day to rest for the final. His return means that Sri Lanka will have to take a tough call between resting one of the three quicks or Mendis. Nuwan Kulasekara and Thilan Thushara have led the attack all year and Mendis hasn't done much in two matches this week, so he may be the one to make way. Sri Lanka are also waiting on the fitness report of Samaraweera, who strained a hamstring after his century against New Zealand and missed the previous match.

Sri Lanka: (probable) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Chamara Kapugedera/Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Thilina Kandamby, 7 Angelo Mathews, 8 Thilan Thushara, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Lasith Malinga.

Karthik may continue to open the innings in Gambhir's absence, given Dhoni's reluctance to send Kohli in early. Kohli is not a specialist opener, though he filled the role in five ODIs in Sri Lanka last summer. He was impressive in handling Murali during this year's IPL, so should present a credible case. There are a couple of other possibilities for India; after Mathews nipped out six with his canny seamers under lights, there's an outside chance that the allrounder Abhishek Nayar gets a game. That would mean India have to drop Yusuf Pathan or one of the three fast bowlers (probably RP Singh, who had a poor last game). Praveen Kumar is another option.

As expected, Chelsea dominated possession and created a host of chances but a combination of wayward final deliveries and good goalkeeping denied them a lead until Anelka (pictured right) struck in first-half injury time.

Ballack and Cole added to the lead early in the second half as Carlo Ancelotti's side taught the newly-promoted club a harsh lesson in top-flight football after the Clarets' shock win against Manchester United.

Anelka should have put the hosts ahead on seven minutes but a heavy touch put the ball in Brian Jensen's arms when he raced clean through after Andre Bikey's error.

Martin Paterson missed a glorious chance to give Burnley a shock lead two minutes later, but he somehow shot wide when found unmarked in the box by Tyrone Mears, who had been allowed behind the Chelsea defence by a Frank Lampard error.

Otherwise, it was wave after wave of blue attacks that saw Jensen save well from Michael Ballack, John Terry and Lampard.

The impressive Didier Drogba had a shot deflected wide after a superb show of strength midway through the opening 45, and he was denied a brilliant solo goal when - after a slick dribble and turn left the hapless Bikey for dead - Clarke Carlisle slid in with a perfectly-timed tackle as the Ivorian prepared to pull the trigger.

Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce says he would have been happy to start the season the way Wolves have done ahead of the sides' meeting at Ewood Park.

Blackburn, on the other hand, find themselves in the relegation zone after suffering defeats against Manchester City and Sunderland in their opening two games before being held to a goalless draw at home by West Ham.

It makes the encounter a must-win game for Allardyce's team, and the manager is wary of the momentum Wolves are building on the back of their Championship-winning campaign last year.

India stumbled in pursuit of 156 under lights but MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina kept cool heads to steer them to a six-wicket win with 57 deliveries to spare and with it end New Zealand's tournament. New Zealand, after opting to bat, made a complete mess of things and ended up with 155, a total that briefly challenged India but eventually proved to be inadequate.

Inspired by their two most experienced bowlers, New Zealand refused to surrender without a scrap but their spirited effort on the field wasn't enough to defend a modest target. Dinesh Karthik was removed early in the piece to bring Rahul Dravid to the crease but his comeback was a labored 45-ball 14, after which Sachin Tendulkar fell for 46. Raina joined Dhoni and finished off the chase with a calculated 72-run partnership.

Dravid endured a few testing moments as he adjusted himself to this format. Shane Bond was particularly quick and nasty in a hostile first spell, which included a fiery maiden sixth over, and repetitively tested Dravid with the short deliveries. Dravid negated Bond's aggression with customary grit only to be trapped lbw by Jacob Oram

US Open Tennis Federer R. v Robredo T Live online

The 52nd-ranked Ukrainian, who had never previously been past the third round of a Grand Slam, took just 47 minutes to rout the 40th-ranked South American who had eliminated her older sister Alona 6-4 6-0 in the second round on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts.

Bondarenko, who is coached by her parents, will seek a semi-final berth against the winner of a later match between 72nd-ranked Czech teen Petra Kvitova, who ousted world number one Dinara Safina, and Belgium's 50th-rated Yanina Wickmayer.

With Safina and fifth seed Jelena Jankovic eliminated from their upset-filled quarter of the draw, at least one unlikely player will emerge for a fairy-tale trip into the last four.

Bondarenko, who saved a match point in her first match before defeating Serbian 11th seed Ana Ivanovic, made her case for the storybook spot by ripping Dulko, who had been the top-rated woman remaining in their quarter.

The Ukrainian romped through the first set in 22 minutes, winning eight-of-nine points on Dulko's second serve and taking advantage of 11 unforced errors.

The second set was just as lopsided. Bondarenko roared to a 4-0 lead, saved a break point in the fifth game with a backhand volley winner on the way to holding and broke to finish the rout.

Bondarenko, 23, won her only tour career title in Birmingham last year and became the first player from her homeland in the last eight of a Slam.

Bolstered by the best attack in the section (13 goals) and the most miserly defence (two goals conceded), Morten Olsen's Denmark are still unbeaten in Group 1 following five wins and a draw. That record has given the Danes a three-point lead over closest challengers Hungary, not to mention a healthy seven-point cushion from pre-qualifying favourites Portugal and Sweden. That said, Carlos Queiroz's Portugal are not out of the running yet. Bruno Alves's last-gasp strike in their 2-1 victory in Albania kept their hopes alive and they would give their prospects another major boost with maximum points in Copenhagen.

In an attempt to find a system better suited to getting everything out of his key individuals, Queiroz could decide to finally discard the 4-2-3-1 strategy favoured by his predecessor, Luiz Felipe Scolari. In its place, he may well opt for a 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield designed to give as much freedom as possible to Cristiano Ronaldo.

The other games
Surprise contenders in Group 1, Hungary could consolidate their position in the top two spots by seeing off a Sweden team boasting six goals from six games - four of those having come against Malta - and facing three away trips in their final four outings. Erwin Koeman's side must nonetheless fare without vital Debrecen centre-back Laszlo Bodnar, traumatised after causing an accidental death on the road last week.

In Group 2, joint-leaders Switzerland and Greece meet in Basel to dispute sole control of the section, while any eventual winner in the game between Israel and Latvia would leave themselves well-placed in the race for a play-off berth.

The tension will be palpable in Bratislava, meanwhile, as Group 3 strugglers the Czech Republic face a derby match that could deal their chances a definitive blow. Slovakia go into the encounter on a high and averaging almost three goals per game, but in the opposition camp Ivan Hasek has called up former stalwarts Tomas Rosicky and Jan Koller, absent since January and June 2008 respectively. Midfielder Jan Polak will miss out through injury. Should the Slovaks slip up and Poland prevail at home against Northern Ireland, the face of the group would change completely, leaving five teams with a realistic shot at sealing first place.

With Group 4 frontrunners Germany not involved in competitive action, Russia will be keen to see off visitors Liechtenstein and climb to within a point of the summit ahead of their meeting with the Mannschaft in Moscow on 10 October.

Spain look untouchable in Group 5 thanks to six consecutive victories, but the fight for a play-off ticket remains intense, with Bosnia-Herzegovina four points clear of Wednesday's visitors Turkey and looking increasingly capable of clinching second place in the pool. A Bosnian win in Armenia would put Turkey under even more pressure, particularly as Fatih Terim's forward line are currently struggling for goals.

In Group 6, Croatia and Ukraine will reprise their battle for runners-up spot at home against Belarus and Andorra respectively, with England comfortably ahead and not scheduled for a competitive game.

For their part, France lie five points shy of Serbia while possessing a game in hand and retain a serious chance of topping Group 7. First place in the section will surely come down to the contest between the two rivals in Belgrade on Wednesday, but before that the 2006 runners-up must find their feet going forward again and overcome a Romania side deprived of dangerous striker Adrian Mutu.

Somewhat under the radar, Marcello Lippi is successfully rebuilding world champions Italy thanks to a number of new faces who have helped the team rise to the top of Group 8. The newcomers will again be called upon to shine in Georgia on Saturday, with the likes of Domenico Criscito, Claudio Marchisio, Federico Marchetti and Gaetano D'Agostino all expected to feature. Elsewhere, the Republic of Ireland must collect at least a point in Cyprus to keep play-off challengers Bulgaria at a suitable distance.

The Netherlands have already sewn up first place in Group 9, of course, and that means Scotland and FYR Macedonia will put their play-off aspirations on the line when they lock horns in Glasgow. Norway have not given up on finishing second either, and they visit Iceland on Saturday before welcoming the Macedonians on

hiukepo Msowoya emerged as the undoubted hero as Malawi came from behind to beat Guinea 2-1 in Blantyre. The victory took the Flames on to three points from four games, level with their opponents, whose slim hopes of reaching the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ were all but extinguished.

Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso, who have nine and six points respectively, will meet in Abidjan later today in the battle to claim the section's solitary berth at next year's global showpiece. The focus for Malawi and Guinea will now be to secure a top-three finish, which would qualify them for the CAF African Cup of Nations Angola 2010.

Oumar Kalabane had given Guinea a 38th-minute lead. However, Msowoya struck twice after the break to the delight of the home crowd.

Malawi will return to action on 10 October, when they will host a Côte d'Ivoire side to whom they lost 5-0 earlier in Group E. Guinea will entertain Burkina Faso one day later.

England (possible) 1 Ravi Bopara, 2 Andrew Strauss (capt), 3 Matt Prior (wk), 4 Owais Shah, 5 Paul Collingwood , 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Luke Wright, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Ryan Sidebottom.

Australia have been forced to field their third international keeper of the summer - and their fourth in all contests - following Brad Haddin's return home for surgery on his broken finger. And Tim Paine, his understudy, could well be asked to open the batting as well, with Clarke keeping Ponting's No. 3 berth warm in his absence.

Australia (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Tim Paine (wk), 3 Michael Clarke (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Callum Ferguson, 6 Cameron White, 7 James Hopes, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Nathan Hauritz 10 Brett Lee, 11 Nathan Bracken.

Sri Lanka v New Zealand, 2nd Twenty20 Live Streaming Online

It is unlikely New Zealand will make any changes given that the unit they fielded on Wednesday won them their first match on tour. The lower-middle order was shaken up by Lasith Malinga, but the management should keep faith in them. Grant Elliott will keep Neil Broom on his toes.

New Zealand: (probable) 1 Brendon McCullum (wk), 2 Jesse Ryder, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Jacob Oram, 6 Neil Broom/Grant Elliott, 7 Peter McGlashan (wk), 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Shane Bond, 11 Ian Butler

Sri Lanka's batting let them down but they have no specialist middle-order players on the bench. Mahela Udawatte is primarily an opener, so Sri Lanka aren't likely to change their current combination. The bowlers all did well, which means Isuru Udana and Kaushal Lokuarachchi should still warm the bench.

Sri Lanka: (probable) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Chamara Kapugedera, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Gihan Rupasinghe, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Malinga Bandara, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Lasith Malinga.

Australian Open champion Nadal will next play Nicolas Kiefer. The German moved on by beating France's Michael Llodra 6-3 6-4 6-4.

Top seed and five-times champion Federer withstood an inspired challenge from Greul before he defeated the pesky journeyman in straight sets.

The 28-year-old Greul squandered two set points in the second set and a 3-0 lead in the third, eventually succumbing to Federer's punishing groundstrokes.

Federer had the decisive third-set break against the German in the 11th game to take a 6-5 lead.

Greul wasted yet another break point on Federer's serve before the Swiss closed out the match with his eighth ace.

Former champion Marat Safin bid farewell to the US Open with a 1-6 6-4 6-3 6-4 defeat by Austrian Jurgen Melzer.

Safin's Grand Slam career came to an end when he punched a backhand into the net to end the two-hour, 13-minute match under sunny skies at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

The 29-year-old Russian, who won the 2000 U.S. Open and was formerly the world's top-ranked player, had already announced plans to retire at the end of the year.

Safin also won the Australian Open in 2005. He is the older brother of women's world number one Dinara Safina.

Sixth seed Juan Martin Del Potro showed he was in good form with a 6-3 6-3 6-1 win over fellow Argentine Juan Monaco.

Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso has insisted he can build a potent midfield partnership with fellow playmaker Xavi as he prepares for Saturday's 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifier at home to Belgium.

Injuries to Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta have left Alonso as the obvious choice alongside Xavi and defensive enforcer Marcos Senna for the fixture at Deportivo's Riazor stadium. Questions have been raised about the pair's compatibility due to their similar playing styles, but the Basque midfielder, now back in La Liga with Real Madrid, is confident they can prosper

he name of versatile Bahraini midfielder Mahmood Abdulrahman may not be well known in many parts of the world but Uzbekistan fans certainly remember it with regret after he scored the winning goal in both matches between the two nations in the Asian qualifiers for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

Bahraini supporters, in contrast, have set their hopes on the 24-year-old leading his country to the FIFA World Cup finals, especially after recent outstanding performances for both his club Al Muharraq and the national team.

Abdulrahman, or ‘Ringo' as he is known to the fans, began his football career with Al Muharraq when he was just nine-years-old before graduating through the youth sides and breaking into the first team five years ago. He won numerous trophies with his local team before a recent on-loan period with Kuwaiti side Al Qadisiya.

Speaking about his time with Al Muharraq and his brief experience in Kuwait Abdulrahman said, "I achieved a great deal with Al Muharraq after I got into the first team, and my experiences were very positive with Al Qadisiya especially since I won three trophies with them."

"Playing for Al Qadisiya helped me a lot to adjust to the professional game. Everyone wants to play in Europe one day and I hope to achieve this dream, especially as the game in Europe is so different from that in Bahrain, the Gulf region or the Arab countries."

England v Australia 1st Twenty20

Lancashire are confident of securing one of the Pakistan-Australia Test matches next year, but their ultimate aim is to bring Ashes cricket back to a redeveloped Old Trafford. The club has submitted its bid to the ECB for one of the neutral games in 2010 and has felt bullish about its chances since the series was announced with the strong Asian links in the area an advantage.

However, while hosting the Test next summer would be a significant boost the absence of an Ashes match this season is still hurting. When Lancashire learnt they wouldn't host Australia over five days it made them realise how seriously the venue needed redeveloping.

"Since Old Trafford first hosted international cricket we have only missed out on three Ashes Tests and one of them was 2009," said Jim Cumbes, the Lancashire chief executive. "There are no guarantees, the ECB can't give any but they have been very supportive. When the work is finished this will be a wonderful stadium. The bidding process for the Ashes in 2013 is probably 12 months away and when it comes around we feel we will be a strong position

Mark Hughes fielded a strong starting XI but Neil Warnock's Championship side matched their wealthy opponents throughout the first half, before succumbing to second-half goals from Shaun Wright-Phillips and Carlos Tevez.

Speculation prior to kick-off was that Hughes would rest a host of his stars and not give a debut to new signing Joleon Lescott, but a real buzz was sent around Selhurst Park shortly before the game's commencement when the team sheet revealed that would not be the case.

Once the game started though it quickly became clear that Palace were not in awe of their opponents. Tevez sliced a shot wide inside the opening three minutes, but from there Palace had the upper hand in terms of goalscoring opportunities.

Clint Hill forced a save out of Shay Given when heading a free-kick down at the far post, and Victor Moses then made the Irishman work when making it to the by-line moments later. Defensively, Palace were alert too as Nathaniel Clyne read Tevez's attempt to feed Robinho in front of goal and intercepted.

Palace thought they were about to take the lead after 24 minutes when Shaun Derry spotted Freddie Sears's run and split the away defence with a pass, but the youngster came out worse in a duel with the experienced Given. Darren Ambrose followed up shortly after with a rasping drive that flew barely an inch over the bar from 25 yards.

Palace keeper Julian Speroni, who was a fitness doubt before this game, showed no signs of sluggishness as he was then called into action twice in quick succession, first denying Emmanuel Adebayor's curling shot before blocking Tevez at close range, but Given was the last of the two glovesmen to be busied before half-time. Alassane N'Diaye's flicked header set Sears in once more, but Given rushed out and saved the striker's nodded attempt.

The second half picked up where the first left off, but with one major exception: City clicked perfectly on the attack. Their new-found fluency brought them the lead five minutes in, as Wright-Phillips hammered a powerful finish past Speroni after Ireland had freed him with a clever overlapping pass.
